It was another action-packed day at the Adelaide International, as round one was completed and two players kicked off second-round play. Our Jimmie48 was again busy around the grounds, photographing a number of singles and doubles matches, plus a couple of practice sessions and off-court happenings.

Second seed Simona Halep won her first singles match in 2020, moving past home wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4 7-5 and into quarterfinals. We have several shots of the Romanian being frustrated, so you can tell that the victory was far from easy. Also through the quarterfinals is top seed Ashleigh Barty, as she won a three-setter against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in two hours and nine minutes.

Sixth seed Aryna Sabalenka put on a brave face and fought past Hsieh Su-Wei 5-7 6-1 7-5 to reach the second round, trying to put aside the tragedy that struck her during the off-season, as her father passed away at the age of 43:

I’m just trying to fight because my dad wanted me to be No.1 and I’m doing it for him and that’s what is helping me to be strong right now.

Also in the first round, Julia Goerges beat Australian Priscilla Hon 7-6(7) 6-3, Maria Sakkari defeated Vitalia Diatchenko 7-5 6-2, and Marketa Vondrousova, sporting her “No rain, no flowers” tattoo, dominated Tatjana Maria 6-3 6-0.

From the doubles competition we have photos of first-round winners Nichole Melichar and Xu Yifan. In the gallery you can see Melichar launching her new clothing deal with Neptune Athletics.

Meanwhile, Donna Vekic and Belinda Bencic were busy practicing, with Vekic even working on her soccer skills, on top of having her hair done for a video shoot.
