Friday’s Pliskova vs. Halep encounter was quite strange. It opened with Pliskova winning the first six games. Then, after an early exchange of breaks in the second set, Halep won six games in a row to get the scoreline to 0-6 6-2 2-0. Pliskova responded with a series of five successive games, but was broken when serving for the match at 5-3 in the decider. In the following game, Halep led 30-0 on her own serve, but Pliskova stole away that advantage and converted her first match point with a dead netcord winner. The awkward match ended with a bizarre match point.

Pliskova finishes 2-1 in the Purple Group and advances to her third straight semifinal where she’ll face world No.1 Ashleigh Barty, who is playing the singles competition at the WTA Finals for the first time.
