The second half of second-round matches at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic took place on Thursday, as the quarterfinal field was wrapped up by Donna Vekic, Amanda Anisimova, Zheng Saisai and Kristie Ahn.
Croatian fifth seed Donna Vekic recovered from a deficit in both sets to see off former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka 6-4 6-3, who won this tournament in 2010, at the time it was based in Stanford. Vekic’s next opponent will be the only unseeded player to reach the quarterfinals — American qualifier Kristie Ahn, who upset Belgian third seed Elise Mertens 6-3 6-3.
Fourth seed Amanda Anisimova needed just 54 minutes to dispatch fellow American Madison Brengle 6-2 6-2 and will next face Chinese Zheng Saisai, who eliminated American eighth seed Danielle Collins 6-2 6-0.
Moreover, Kristie Ahn sat down with a group of high school kids to share some tennis wisdom and career planning advice, while Elina Svitolina practiced her driving skills in the Porsche booth on her day off.
