In a third-round Wimbledon meeting of former world No.1s, Simona Halep eased into the second week of the Grand Slam as Victoria Azarenka couldn’t control her unforced errors count and the Romanian celebrated 6-3 6-1 in just 66 minutes.

It was the world No.40 Azarenka who opened the match with a lead, going to 3-1 after 14 minutes of play, but from that moment the Belarusian won just one game. On paper this was a blockbuster, but in reality it turned into a relatively easy match for the seventh-seeded Halep, as Azareka helped her with 33 unforced errors. Something in Azarenka’s game was simply not working and even though she kept encouraging herself throughout the match, her shots were off and Halep raced into the fourth round even though her numbers were not that impressive.

In the fourth round Halep will face 15-year-old qualifier Cori Gauff, who saved two match point to come back from the brink of defeat and beat Polona Hercog in three sets.

  1. Like I said in another post, I don’t understand why anyone would think Azarenka would/could beat Halep (corny TV commentators). Just ridiculous! Halep’s one of the hardest grinders out there and it’s a joy to watch her grind. She’ll be just fine. On another note, I see you Ash Barty. Looking good!

  2. The Real Deal, Azarenka was no match for Halep in this R3 match, but it was a high-profile clash because of their career achievements. I expect Halep to be the one to stop Gauff, although I’ve enjoyed watching the teenager so much and I’d like her fairytale to continue. There’s so much hype around her now that Halep may have nerves facing the youngster, but in the end I believe that experience will prevail.
