In the second round of Wimbledon, top seed Simona Halep looked to be in danger of joining the heap of defeated seeds, but the world No.1 overcame a slow start and won ten games in a row from a 3-5 deficit in the first set to defeat China’s world No.126 Zheng Saisai 7-5 6-0.

Third seed Garbine Muguruza suffered the earliest exit of a defending champion at Wimbledon since Steffi Graf was defeated in the first round in 1994. The Spaniard lost her second-round match to Alison Van Uytvanck 5-7 6-2 6-1. The Belgian world No.47 lost the first set despite holding a 4-2 lead, but dominated the remainder of the match to move into the third round of Wimbledon for the first time and record her first Top 10 victory.

After Day 4 and completion of second-round action, we have only two seeds alive among the Top 8 seeds, No.1 Simona Halep and No.7 Karolina Pliskova.

  1. Halep never looked to be in any danger, as her opponent was no match for her. She played her game like the champ that she is…grinding hard, chasing down balls like crazy, smart shot-making, powerful ball striking, and good serving. In addition, she maintained a positive attitude and disposition. For me, the match proved to be quite boring due to absolutely no competition/excitement whatsoever. I like Halep’s game and fight, but I’m rooting for Queen/GOAT/Super Woman Serena Williams to win the title. Nonetheless, congrats to Halep; her hustle is on point.

  2. Halep better watch out for her next opponent in the third round. “Suki” Hsieh (as she refers to herself in her facebook posts) is a tricky player whom could slice and dice Simona to frustration. Just wondering what Su-Wei’s outfit will look like 😉
