Top seed Garbine Muguruza got a virus during her previous tournament in Wuhan and today had to retire in the first round of the China Open in Beijing, trailing Barbora Strycova 6-1 2-0. Seed No.15 Sloane Stephens made her second straight first-round exit following the US Open triumph, losing 6-3 6-0 to qualifier and fellow American Christina McHale in just 62 minutes.
