After Petra Kvitova’s much-discussed title win in Birmingham, the WTA tour moves from the British Midland’s all the way to the Channel Coast with Eastbourne’s Aegon International, the final lead-up event before Wimbledon.

Famous for its sea breezes and seagulls, Eastbourne boasts a packed draw this year with 8 of the current Top 10 playing, including world #1 Angelique Kerber and followers Simona Halep and Karolina Pliskova.

Unfortunately, not competing in Eastbourne will be the freshly-crowned Aegon Classic champ Petra Kvitova, who had to pull out due to an abdominal injury. Nevertheless, Kvitova was on site on Monday, holding her pre-tournament press conference.

Out on the courts, the day had some surprises in store as local favorite Heather Watson upset last year’s champion Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets in the second round. Also out of the tournament is Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard, losing her round-one match against Barbora Strycova in three sets.

After plenty of sunshine on Monday, the weather forecast looks challenging for the rest of the week, with plenty of rain on the horizon. Rain or shine, Women’s Tennis Blog will be bringing you all the latest from Eastbourne, so keep checking back!
