Angelique Kerber’s challenging start into the 2017 season continued on Tuesday as the world #1 lost her second-round match at the 2017 Apia International Sydney, making an unexpectedly early exit from the tournament.

Playing 19-year-old Russian talent Daria Kasatkina, Kerber lost a tight first-set tiebreak, unable to swing the match around, allowing the promising youngster her first ever win over a top-ranked player.

The tournament’s second seed Agnieszka Radwanska fared much better, winning her match against Christina McHale in straight sets and joining Eugenie Bouchard and Anastasia Pavluychenkova. While the Canadian fan favorite won her match against Dominika Cibulkova, Pavlyuchenkova sent 2016 Sydney champion Svetlana Kuznetsova off to Melbourne.

The 2017 Apia International will continue on Wednesday with the tournament’s quarterfinal stage. Keep checking back to Women’s Tennis Blog for all the latest from Sydney.

  1. Extra pressure for Angie as she’s defending 2000 points on her Melbourne triumph a year ago. I think Angie will struggle a little bit this year but she’ll remain in Top 5 for sure. She’s a hard worker and I really like her attitude in the court.
