First-round play at the 2016 Generali Ladies Linz had the first major surprise in store on Tuesday as Eugenie Bouchard made a surprising early exit in Austria.

The Canadian fan favorite lost her first-round match to Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit in straight sets, continuing what has been a largely disappointing season.

Bouchard wasn’t the only young player who didn’t live up to the expectations on Tuesday, as Russia’s Daria Kasatkina was helpless against Denisa Allertova from the Czech Republic, losing her match in two quick sets.

One player who fared much better was Carla Suarez Navarro. The Spaniard kept her somewhat slim Singapore hopes alive by beating Germany’s Mona Barthel in straights. Suarez Navarro is the first of four Singapore contenders in Linz to complete her first-round match. All others will be in action on Wednesday, including the marquee match between Belinda Bencic and Dominika Cibulkova, as well as the hard-hitters duel between Madison Keys and Carmila Giorgi.
