Wednesday at the 2015 Rogers Cup in Toronto was all about the second-round matchup between Victoria Azarenka and Petra Kvitova.

The two double-slam champions last played each other all the way back in October 2011, almost four years ago, making this one of the WTA’s most elusive encounters, especially since Azarenka’s rise to #1 and to being a two-time Australian Open champion was still a thing of the future when they last met in Istanbul of 2011.

Unfortunately, the exciting clash was a bit spoiled by the news that Petra Kvitova is currently fighting mono, indicating that the Czech two-time Wimbledon champion isn’t in peak physical shape right now, a fact that became obvious as the match went underway.

Even though Kvitova tried hard to put up a good fight and managed to make some games rather close, Azarenka comprehensively swept by the Czech Wimbledon champion in straight sets, making the third round of the tournament in her ongoing effort to continue to rise up the rankings again.

Afterwards, the fans in Toronto were in for a very special treat as Agnieszka Radwanska kicked off her 2015 Rogers Cup campaign with a match against Germany’s Julia Görges, wearing Lotto’s most spectacular new creation. The shimmery golden dress was talk of the town afterwards as Radwanska certainly was interesting to look at on her way to a straight-set win over lucky loser Görges.

Thursday at the 2015 Rogers Cup will be all about the third round as all remaining top players will be in action to fight for their spot in the quarterfinals. Keep checking back to Women’s Tennis Blog for all the latest from Toronto!

  1. I wish Nike had some variety in the kits as it is hard to watch two players in the exact outfits play each other and know who is who.
