Wimbledon junior champions – now and then

Some time ago I came across this cute photo on the Tennis Forum and I feel that now is the perfect timing to share it with you – not only has it been three months since I last updated Women’s Tennis Blog’s Little Tennis Stars section, but the girls from the picture are both Wimbledon junior champions and are doing well at the start of this year’s edition of the grasscourt Grand Slam. So who are they?

Of course, it’s not hard to guess – the 1994-born best friends Eugenie Bouchard and Laura Robson. The year of birth is not the only thing they have in common:

  • Both are No.1-ranked players representing their countries – Bouchard (Canada), Robson (Great Britain);
  • Both won the Wimbledon Junior Girls’ Championship – Bouchard in 2012, Robson in 2008;
  • Both are through to the second round of the ongoing Wimbledon – on Day 1 Bouchard was victorious on her first appearance at the big Wimbledon, defeating Galina Voskoboeva 5-7 7-6(5) 6-4, while on Day 2 Laura Robson upset tenth seed Maria Kirilenko 6-3 6-4.

The friendship of Laura and Genie, who have known each other since they were nine, is also famous for their Gangnam Style video:
