Less than 24 hours after finishing runner-up at the WTA Championships in Istanbul, Maria Sharapova has not only glamorously arrived to Prague on Monday, she went sightseeing with her best friend, taking some jumping photos in front of the Dancing House, attended a press conference, had some fun with fellow tennis players and Czech hosts Petra Kvitova and Lucie Safarova and then proceeded to play an exhibition match against them.
After her WTA Championships final she was asked when her next match is, and she almost forgot about Prague.
Not sure right now. I don’t know. Tomorrow actually. I’m going to Prague. Oh, no. Oopsies. How did I sign up for that one?
The format of the exhibition was such that Kvitova played the first set against Sharapova and Safarova stepped in for the second set. Thanks to the Unseeded and Looming, I learned that Kvitova lost the first set 1-6 and didn’t look good at all (could be the viral illness that forced her to withdraw from Istanbul), while Safarova lost the second set 6-7. Oddly enough, Sharapova picked up a small ankle injury during the exhibition!
The exhibition took place at the 02 Arena, where over the weekend Petra Kvitova and Lucie Safarova, alongside Lucie Hradecka and Andrea Hlavackova, will defend the Czech Republic’s title in the Fed Cup World Group final against Serbian team featuring Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Bojana Jovanovski and Aleksandra Krunic.
