I can’t believe just two days after I wrote about how distant Maria Sharapova and her fiancé Sasha Vujacic seem lately and how, according to Sharapova’s statements, the wedding seems to be a distant thing on her mind, even though they got engaged almost two years ago, we’re getting the quite official information that the tennis-basketball couple is no more. Actually, they probably broke up three months ago! Everything matches – that’s about the period Maria has been without her expensive engagement ring.

How did we get the news? Thanks to a translated report in La Gazzetta Dello Sport Italian newspaper. Vujacic himself announced the split and, as you can assume, the most probable reason for the breakup was the fact that they couldn’t see a lot of each other due to their demanding worldwide schedules.

Professionally, Sharapova is thriving. Only in the recent period, in the supposedly post-breakup three months, Sharapova completed her Career Slam at the French Open and won silver at the Olympics, while at the current US Open only minutes ago she comfortably progressed to the fourth round with a 6-1 6-1 victory over Mallory Burdette.

UPDATE: Now it’s 100% official! In the post-match conference, after her third-round win, Sharapova confirmed that she hasn’t been with Vujacic “since the end of spring, actually.” Why Sharapova didn’t reveal it to the media earlier? Well, nobody asked her!

I was waiting for someone to actually ask me that question, but nobody did, directly.

Masha also confirmed that the split was inevitable due to their demanding schedules, especially Sasha’s career in Turkey:

He wasn’t home one time during the 10 months that he was in Turkey, so that made it extremely difficult.

The two remain on good terms and still consider each other friends.

  1. Marija, you are too good!!! You see it before everybody else. If only you could have such a performing crystal ball for Ivanovic matches! 😉

  2. Haha and a couple of weeks ago, someone found my blog on Google typing “How to become Sharapova’s boyfriend” 🙂 Was it you, John? 😀

Gregoire, for Ana I have to train my psychic abilities more 🙂

  3. Well, guys can try it, but Maria is high-maintanance:-P.

I think that to predict anything on womens tour is a task for a psychic nowadays. Ana is looking good so far but the first challenges are still ahead of her.

Now that Miss Sunshine is gone I wish the best of luck to Serbians 😉

  4. I have to say that I’m surprised in one way, but it’s understandable. Maybe it’s the best thing for her if she keeps playing the way she has the last few months!

It’s great to see that the two Serbians are doing well at a slam at the same time again- it’s been far too long! It would be great if they could both keep it going but I’d be surprised if JJ got past Radwanska though. Fingers crossed 😛

  5. It seems to me that this relationship would’ve worked if Maria abandoned her career and moved to Turkey to be with her man, which would be an unreasonable thing to do, given how much she has yet to give to tennis and receive from tennis. I suppose more or less the same is true vice versa. It’s a touch outcome, but the only reasonable one, they are still young.

Oh well, JJ is out, typical performance…

  6. Be as it may, it sure broke this ole, stone-hard, tennis-heart of mine. No wonder there are more comments on this post than on many about the game itself. And now, excuse me, I’m off, to do some serious sobbing…
