Julia Goerges was top seed at the sixth annual NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies, the only former champion in the draw and the WTA blogger from the event, but she suffered a first-round loss to world No.221 Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp 3-6 6-3 6-3. The match was interrupted by rain for four hours.

Two years ago, Goerges won her first WTA title here in Bad Gastein. This year she’s a blogger debutante and that’s the only role she’ll continue to have at the event, besides playing doubles with Jill Craybas. Nevertheless, the German will surely continue to enjoy the event, as much as she enjoyed the toga-themed player party.

Here’s an excerpt from Goerges’ blog, expressing how much she likes the tournament:

It’s a very nice venue here in Bad Gastein – I’m always happy to come back. The hotel is next to the site, actually it’s in the site, which is pretty nice because you only have a short way to the courts. And everyone here treats us well. It’s just a very well-organized tournament. Also, I have had a lot of holidays in Austria before – I’ve been skiing a lot here – and it’s a great part of the world to relax in. This is a tournament where you can really enjoy yourself, 100%.
