World No.18 Petra Kvitova, one of the players deserving special attention at the upcoming French Open, convincingly defeated second seed Vera Zvonareva in the third round of the $4.5 million Mutua Madrid Open.

Russia’s Zvonareva scored two aces to Kvitova’s none, and had a better first serve percentage, but it was Kvitova who won more points, both on her first and second serves (20% better than Zvonareva on the second serve), and also, Kvitova saved seven of eight break points, while Zvonareva saved just two of six. Final score 6-1 6-4.

It was a bad day for many Russians at the Madrid Open. Dinara Safina fell to Julia Goerges 6-4 4-6 6-4 in the second round and Alisa Kleybanova fell to Roberta Vinci 6-2 6-2. Let’s see what Maria Sharapova will do against Dominika Cibulkova, their match is currently in progress.

Seventh seed Jelena Jankovic lost to Lucie Safarova 6-4 4-6 7-5, also in the second round, while sixth seed Li Na scored a 6-1 6-4 victory over Iveta Benesova. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

  1. Was pleased to see today’s schedule with Petra, Julia, Li Na and Dominika in action.

Not happy about Julia’s performance with the high error count and her not taking more advantage of Safina double-faulting all over the place. Ugly match but like how Jules hung in there in that tough last set– mental toughness is so important. Certainly Would not have preferred her to be out there for over 2hrs in an energy-draining 3 sets before meeting Caro next. No doubt Woz will be the fresher player after having the day off.

Regardless of the outcome, it will be interesting to see how well Julia holds it together under adverse conditions. Caro would love to avenge her loss plus go deeper here as she’s earning points, still how much if any did the aggressive youngster Bojangles weaken her last match?

Glad to Petra steam-rolling over Vera, it had to be a confidence booster to the big lefty. She definitely has the skills and mental toughness to go far in the sport.

Always like to see Li Na win, but Benesova was hardy a top opponent.

Dominika is not going to win RG, you don’t go from no wta title wins to winning a slam. yes she will win a title one day.

  2. This was a match of nerves, in my opinion this match was won by the Kvitova not only by her great play she also won the match mentally as she was proven to play as we like to call it a “percentage tennis”. She was better in all chapters of the match. After all a great win for Kvitova.
