Caroline WozniackiIt didn’t look like that in the beginning, but the match between Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva turned into a dramatic encounter at the Sony Ericsson Championships.

Wozniacki let a 6-0 5-2 lead slip when Zvonareva evened at one set apiece after the second-set tiebreak in which she even saved two match points. Wozniacki built a 3-1 lead in the third set, but the leg that caused her withdrawal from Luxembourg last week stated hurting again. Then Zvonareva won four of the next five games for a 4-3 lead. Still, Wozniacki didn’t give up and despite pain and tears that I have to admit frightened me, the Dane won the match 6-0 6-7(3) 6-4.

The match against Zvonareva was Wozniacki’s second marathon in two days. In her previous match she beat Victoria Azarenka after losing the first set and saving a match point in the third.

Zvonareva was last year’s runner-up and this year she entered the Championships as an alternate, after Dinara Safina’s withdrawal. (photo: Ralf Reinecke)

  1. Oh wow, this girl is tough! I wish she recovered quickly, hope is there, her body is still young. What she did was heroic!

  2. This girl is so cool, i mean, after all the pain and tears on the court she later that day gave an interview for eurosport live and she was all smiling and totally relaxed! Good 4 her! :)))

  3. omg caroline i mean!! she played like almost 30 tournaments this year! and there still gas in her tank!!! i admire her really and against azarenka despite the first set she played an extraordinary match!!

  4. Good point VMW, I bet all the degenerate gamblers were betting on Wozzy to quit again. 😛

Hey Nacho, her body is paying the price for playing too many tournaments.

This match says more about Vera Z. being the fresher player and could not defeat an opponent who was on one leg, literally.

  5. In all fairness though Carlos, Vera’s been on one leg (foot) since her ankle injury back in May (and a thigh injury since August).
I don’t think that Caroline would’ve been able to win this match if she weren’t playing an injured player also, but good effort nonetheless. Also, good point vmw, very good point.

  6. Ms. Ella good point, I was surprised how fast Vera came back from her foot injury. Still Vera was fresher than Wozzy noting that Wozzy had the marathon match against Azarenka the previous day, and it was Vera’s first match in this tournament. Vera definitely has to learn how to go for the jugular.

Vera’s career at this point is paralleling Dani H.

  7. Wow @ WTA dramas. The first set was the worst I’ve ever seen Vera play then out of nowhere she gets a nosebleed in the second set and wins the tiebreak. Then when Caroline was a few points from winning the matches, she falls to the floor like she’s dying (looks like a stroke to me) then wins the match because Vera just can’t play tennis.

Seriously, WTA is at its all time low but I can’t help but enjoy it. 😛

  8. that match was hilarious!!! when vera’s nose was bleeding caroline was being scolded by her couch while the radwanska sister were dancing to lady gaga’s pokerface… priceless moment!!!

  9. Teerin, I thought that Caro was having an epilepsy seizure. 😛

HaHa Nacho funny comments. I wonder why you would think Caro’s last name is Jankovic? 😛

  10. Thank you for the link Ms. Marija, I had not seen that camera angle. 😉 Do I dare to say what I’m thinking? Maybe Sweet Caroline gets pleasure from pain.

  11. lol she fully looks like shes doing some tribal dance when she gets the cramp.. haha then she rolls over on the ground and.. is that THRUSTING?! haha love the song, woz woz woz niacki
