Three players are in the battle to take the last qualifying spot of the 2009 Sony Ericsson Championships – Jelena Jankovic, Vera Zvonareva and Agnieszka Radwanska – and which one of them will qualify will be determined during this week’s Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

World No.7 Vera Zvonareva and world No.9 Jelena Jankovic are the Top 2 seeds at the Kremlin Cup and the main contenders for the last berth at the season-ending Championships. Here’s how things are standing:

1) if they both lose prior to the quarterfinals, Jankovic will be the one to qualify for Doha;
2) if they both reach the quarterfinals, whoever does better from then on will have more points for Doha;
3) if they both lose in the same round from the quarterfinals and on, Zvonareva will have more points for Doha.

The first condition for world No.10 Agnieszka Radwanska to qualify for the Sony Ericsson Championships is to win the Kremlin Cup, and the second condition is that neither Zvonareva nor Jankovic reach the final.

Players that have already qualified include: Dinara Safina, Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Elena Dementieva, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Venus Williams and Victoria Azarenka. (photos: Ralf Reinecke, Stephane Martinache)

  1. I would like to see Zvonareva in again but you are correct Teerin, hopefully she won’t have a meltdown with the pressure. With regard to Jankovic, I think part of it will depend on whether she has healed from the arm injury that required her to retire from the Tokyo title against Sharapova. In some ways it is too bad for either of these players to play the week before Doha.

  2. Radwanska won’t get the final place. Like Teerin said, it will be between Zvonareva and Jankovic. Personally I don’t mind who it is. Whoever doesn’t qualify can go to Bali! I think it was funny that Jankovic made it perfectly clear that she has no intention of going to Bali if she doesn’t get Doha. She obviously thinks its below her 😎 I’m sure the Tour were very amused by that 😛

  3. I’d love to see vera, only because i met her and she was very kind! i want be here for a while, i have exams. see you soon 😉

  4. Bróna, Jankovic said that? Oh, it’s so JJ! And she wouldn’t go to Bali even though she loves Bali as an island? Unbelievable. Still, I would like the Glitter Queen to make it to Doha.

    Karunya, thank you very much. It’s nice meeting you and I hope I’ll see you here often.

    Jacob, good luck with your exams. Don’t let my blog distract you. 😀

  5. Marija, yes, Jankovic said that and I wasn’t a bit surprised. Some of the stuff she comes out with…….no-one else but her would even think of it 🙂 I’m still doubtful of her chances. I think she is more likely to lose in Moscow than Vera is.

  6. That’s the way she is, and I can understand people who don’t like her for such an attitude. I still have enough love of JJ to always forgive her.

  7. I doubt Jankovic will get to Doha,she is not in the good shape as well as Radwanska. I think Vera has the most potential to win a final spot of course IF SHE DOES NOT CRUMBLE AS SHE DID AT US OPEN.
