Pennetta, who will on Monday become the first Italian Top 10 women’s tennis player, looked a little bit worn-out playing against Safina who was on fire, hitting winner after winner. Safina retained her perfect record against Pennetta, having won all their seven meetings.

In her eighth final of the 2009 season Safina will face the winner of the semifinal between fourth seed Elena Dementieva and fifth seed Jelena Jankovic. (photo: Life.com)

Well, at least the ‘pass the parcel: world no.1’ will not be flying in the air: seems as though Dina will definetely retain her position at the pinnacle and officially be top-seeded at Us Open, but in other entirely irrelevant news: Rafa Nadal won’t be, after plunging from the summit of the ATP has now been dethroned from world’s second best since since July 18, 2005, by Andy Murray. He has successfully accomplished his career goal thus far, to obstruct one of the most legendary and scintillating rivalries in the history of the sport. Expect to be at the epicentre of the virtual earthquake from the shockwaves propagated by internet tennis blogs and fan clubs in these following days.

Go JJ!!!! She just won against Dementieve! Finally she’s back with some good results!! I’ve been waiting for a long time now! JJ all the way!

OMG! Elena had 6-2 i the breaker in the third and ended up losing against JJ! (Though JJ blew 5-4 40-love i the third as well). Talk about Lena choking at the last couple of tournaments.

First against Serena in Wimby, and then now again to JJ.

Slam-seeking-Elena is not looking like a possible queen of New York at all!

    Safina is unbelievably professional.

So consistent but obviously she lacks a cutting edge.

Anyway speaking of tennis, the ranking system is certainly under pressure?
