Maria SharapovaMaria Sharapova was today playing her first match on grass since last year’s Wimbledon, where she lost in the second round.

Sharapova is back on her beloved grass, although the claycourt season was everything but unsuccessful for her, and beat Stephanie Dubois 6-4 6-2 in the first round of the AEGON Classic in Birmingham. The Russian was victorious at that tournament in 2004, just before winning Wimbledon, her first Grand Slam title.

Sharapova, who has climbed from No.102 to No.73 in the world, will next face Alexa Glatch of the United States, who upset Flavia Pennetta at the recently-finished Roland Garros. (photo: Stephane Martinache)

  3. WOW, that’s more than awesome! She’s fantastic. I’m honored. Thank you for informing me, Jacob. I’ll reply to her later today.

  4. Maria has match point against Alexa Glatch in her second round match but it is now suspended due to rain at 6-3, 5-4.

What a time to suspend a match.

  5. The rain won’t stop so the play today is now all canceled. If there is rain the whole day tomorrow then I’m afraid the tournament will be canceled as well.

Maria will be playing both her second and third round match tomorrow as the second and fourth match on Centre Court.

  6. Yes, Bróna, I’m a devoted Maria fan like you are. [:P]

Marija, there were a little rain scare today but it did not last very long. Maria step on court and took less than one minute to finish the match out 6-3, 6-4. Her next opponent will be Francesca Schiavone. I have to tell you I’m very impressed with how she won against her opponent 6-1, 6-1. She’s a very tough player but I did not expect her to play this well on grass. Her results this year were not very impressive either.

Maria and Fracesca will battle it out as the fourth match on Centre Court after Zheng Jie’s match.

  7. Maria’s match against Francesca Schiavone ended with Maria winning 6-1, 6-3. She should have won it at 6-1, 5-2 but the outcome still says Maria as the winner. Congratulations Maria, hopefully she’ll move past the quarterfinals for the first time since her comeback (since she made only the quarterfinals in her previous two tournaments).

Maria served two aces during the match with a 66% first serve percentage. Well done! Yanina Wickmayer is up next, and it’ll not be easy. She was a finalist last year and won two “full” matches today both in straight sets.
