Amelie MauresmoSeed No.20 Amelie Mauresmo of France defeated world No.134 Elena Baltacha 4-6 6-3 6-2 in the second-round match full of unforced errors.

The Australian Open champion Mauresmo started off well, breaking Baltacha in the third game. But Baltacha then won four games in a row for a 5-2 lead. However, serving for the set at 5-3, Baltacha got nervous and Mauresmo broke her serve. Still, the Briton eventually won the first set 6-4.

In the second set Mauresmo broke Baltacha at the very beginning, and despite many ups and downs of both players during the set, that initial break kept Mauresmo’s hopes of advancing alive, as it took the match to a deciding set.

In the third set Baltacha broke Mauresmo in the first game, and had a 2-0 lead, but since then the Frenchwoman won all the games and secured her spot in the third round of the Australian Open.

Other notable results so far on day 4:

Fourth seed Elena Dementieva advanced to the third round beating Iveta Benesova 6-4 6-1, seed No.18 Dominika Cibulkova crushed Yung-Jan Chan 6-0 6-2, while No.14 seed Patty Schnyder lost to Virginie Razzano 6-3 6-1. Victoria Azarenka, seeded 13th, advanced when her opponent Tathiana Garbin retired.  Kateryna Bondarenko, whose upset of Agnieszka Radwanska in the first round has remained the biggest by now, made one more step further by reaching the third round. 1. Hi Marija!

I’m very sad, like i want to get off this seat, but I have to tell you, that Vee was out of the Aussie Open.

She lost to Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-2, 3-6, 5-7; Carla’s backhand was amazingly destructive the last two sets. Though Vee was not playing bad either, Carla just played awesome tennis. Many great points and rallies have been played.

Carla actually, have been to a quarters in a Slam, at last year’s French open she was defeated by Jelena Jankovic in the quarters. Love to see her progress, maybe the championship perhaps, defeating Elena and Serena and Jelena along the way.

But sad for Vee to end her Aussie title search this way. She may again hope for next year. I hope Vee’s confidence will not be affected by this one, hope she still finds the motivation to suceed in the next slam with this defeat. i really felt sorry for her, I love her winning the Aussies this year, but I guess the best woman deserves the title so much.

Carla, should now be very joyous with this defeat. I hope she will not get deflated by her defeat of one of the favorites to win the title. I hope Carla could get through the draw, and possibly be into the next week. Hope she finds this as a motivation for success this year. Love to see a one-handed backhand again in action.

Love you Venus. Love you Carla. Te Amo los gentes.

Mabuhay Marija! I hope you’re fine. But I’m still glad that my other bets for the title are playing well, Jelena, Serena and Elena!

MArija, I’m depressed with this result. Like I have waited for Vee to step in the second set, but the errors have crept in. And Carla was just amazingly good on her backhand and also on her forehand, and she just lets Venus run in the court. But still, Venus displayed amazing tennis.

Keep it up all! Good evening Marija!

  2. So much for the predictions… Venus and Elena were among the biggest favorites for the title, and now we see Venus saying goodbye in the second round already. However, I’m sure Venus won’t cry over this loss for long, she’s very experienced after all. Therefore, you Pat should put a smile on your face too. 🙂
