Serbia to host a WTA tennis tournament in Belgrade Arena

Belgrade Arena, SerbiaI hope this is not April Fools’ joke: Serbia will probably host a WTA event in February or October next year.

The tournament would be a Tier II and would have up to $750,000 prize money. The event would take place indoors, inside the Belgrade Arena. The surface would be hard. In May, WTA Tour CEO Larry Scott will visit the capital of Serbia, in order to examine the Belgrade Arena.

Decision whether the tournament will be played in February or in October will be made after a meeting with two Serbia’s women’s tennis stars, world No.2 Ana Ivanovic and No.3 Jelena Jankovic.

All the details about the tournament should be determined during Wimbledon, meaning in the second half of June. (source in Serbian: B92)

I’m crossing my fingers for that! Belgrade’s sport center “ARENA” is beautiful, Serbia definitely deserve that tournament!

Yeah, Gigou, it would be amazing! And the fact it would be a Tier II makes it even better.
