Caroline Wozniacki safely through to Seoul quarters

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki breezed past qualifier Caroline Garcia 6-2 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the KDB Korea Open in Seoul. Her previous victory at the tournament was also confident, 6-1 6-2 against Arantxa Rus, which is a nice recovery for the Dane after her first-round loss at the US Open. Next for Wozniacki is seventh seed Klara Zakopalova, who beat Magdalena Rybarikova 6-1 7-6(6).

Maria Kirilenko, the 2008 Seoul champion and second seed this year, retired yesterday at 1-all in the first set against Korean wildcard Lee So-Ra due to a left back injury. Fourth seed Nadia Petrova also fell victim to a back injury, withdrawing today before her second-round encounter with the newlywed Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez. The Spaniard is defending her Seoul title this week, but last time she entered the tournament ranked 36th, while now she’s No.93 – at the end of 2011 she had a knee surgery and this season she joined the circuit in May due to right thigh injuries. Jelena Jankovic and Mladjan Janovic break up after four years of dating

I've been writing about women's tennis for five and a half years and this is by far the busiest period regarding wedding/hookup/breakup news. In just a period of a week we had the wedding of Iveta Benesova and Jurgen Melzer, announcement of Justine Henin's pregnancy and spottings of Serena and Venus Williams with new boyfriends. Also, just three weeks ago we learned about Maria Sharapova's called-off engagement to Sasha Vujacic, and now we're hearing that Jelena Jankovic ended her four-year relationship with Mladjan Janovic for pretty much the same reasons as Sharapova's – career obligations drew them apart.

Jankovic and the handsome Montenegrin waterpolo player met at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, more precisely in McDonald's, and have since been in a stable relationship, at least according to the information that reached the media, but the fact that Jankovic is traveling the world playing tennis and Janovic is usually in Italy where he plays for Savona has finally taken its toll. The split happened several months ago and it was amicable.

According to a Serbian source, Mladjan spent his summer in Kotor, Montenegro, where Jelena used to be a regular, even before she met him, but this year Jelena didn't visit the seaside town and Mladjan was seen in the arms of another woman.

Venus and Serena have new boyfriends

Just weeks after we wondered about the silence in Venus Williams' love life, we have it pretty much confirmed that a new boyfriend is there, while in May Serena Williams said that past breakups and heartaches have put so much emotional burden on her that she's not ready date for another decade, but there is serious photo proof that a romance with her coach is going on.

According to People, Venus has been dating Cuban model Elio Alberto Pis, who is eight years her junior, for several months now. The relationship rumors started swirling during the US Open, when Pis was there supporting Venus from the stands. The two were also seen holding hands and kissing in the corridors of Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 24-year-old Pis currently lives in Miami. He graduated psychology at the Florida International University two years ago, but is no stranger to modeling and he even posed with Venus for her clothing line EleVen.

Only four months ago Serena stated "I have given up on dating" and now she's spotted in France, hugging with her French adviser Patrick Mouratoglou, 42, head of the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy. Serena trained at the academy after her first-round loss at Roland Garros in May. Read more »

Top seed Bartoli retires in Guangzhou, Kanepi and Wozniacki cruise in Seoul

Marion Bartoli, top seed at the GRC Bank Guangzhou International Women's Open and quarterfinalist at the recent US Open, retired in the first round while trailing Taiwan’s Chang Kai-Chen 4-3. The reason for the withdrawal from the $220,000 Chinese event was gastrointestinal illness.

At the other tournament going on this week, the $500,000 KDB Korea Open, No.1 seed Caroline Wozniacki cruised past Arantxa Rus 6-1 6-2. The Dane, who is playing her first tournament as a non-Top 10 player in three and a half years, has been practicing hard and is trying to focus on one match at a time.

Third seed Kaia Kanepi is also through, with a 6-1 6-0 victory over Han Sung-Hee. Kanepi is playing her first event since the French Open, having recovered from a bilateral Achilles injury. The only seed that lost in Seoul was No.5 Julia Goerges, who fell to Silvia Soler-Espinosa 1-6 7-6(5) 6-2. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

WTA players at the 2012 US Open and their corresponding animated characters/movies

After Grand Slams, you are used to our contributor Omair giving unofficial titles to players based on their performances, and for the recently-finished US Open he did the same, but with a little twist, he gave names to players inspired by animated movies. We hope you'll like it!

SERENA WILLIAMS – RANGO

Serena not only won her 15th major, but proved again that she is not done yet with tennis by winning the second straight Grand Slam and the Olympics in between. Serena lost a total of 19 games en route to the US Open final, where she was pushed hard by Victoria Azarenka, who even served for the championship in the third set, but Serena showed her superior class and experience to bring her opponent back to earth and win her fourth US Open title. In doing so, Serena showed everyone that "No man can walk out of his own story", just like Rango.

VICTORIA AZARENKA – VECTOR

Vector from "Despicable Me" tried in every way to let Gru down, but in the end he lost and Gru won. Azarenka gave everything she had, but she came up short to one of the best players in tennis history. Don’t take it negatively. By giving Azarenka the title of Vector, I don’t refer to the vicious methods Vector used in the movie, I am thinking of the positive side of it, that she fought with her whole heart and body, but in the end she had to satisfy herself with the runner-up trophy.

MARIA SHARAPOVA – TANGLED

Sharapova was not at her best in her last three matches, yet she never gave up, fighting hard to stay alive in the fourth round against Nadia Petrova, then in the quarters against Marion Bartoli, and then in the semis she finally got tangled in her service demons and succumbed to the pressure of Victoria Azarenka.
