Serena Williams clinches record sixth Miami title

Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova for the eleventh straight time in their careers, the streak dating back to 2005, to claim her sixth title at the Sony Open Tennis, which is a record on the WTA Tour, while Sharapova fell to a discouraging 0-5 in Miami finals.

Serena converted all seven of her break opportunities and came back from a set and a break down to overcome Sharapova 4-6 6-3 6-0. From 2-3 in the second set she won ten straight games and became only the fourth woman to win any WTA event six times, joining Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf and Chris Evert.

It was the first time since 2008 that Sharapova won a set against Serena, but the American’s dominance is unstoppable and plus the stats were on her side as she leads all active players for winning percentage when losing the first set, which is now 45.5%. Sharapova earns fifth shot at clinching the Miami title

Starting the match by winning the first ten points and finishing it with 59 points to her opponent's 29, Maria Sharapova stormed past unlikely former world No.1 semifinalist Jelena Jankovic 6-2 6-1 to reach her fifth Miami final, hoping to finally win the title in the city where she first landed when she moved to the United States as a child.

Sharapova has now won 11 straight matches, 22 straight sets, 45 straight matches against players outside the Top 20 and four against the Serb. Now her task is to improve her 0-4 record in Miami finals when she faces the winner of the Serena Williams vs. Agnieszka Radwanska semifinal. Sharapova beats Errani in two long sets, advances to Miami semifinals

Maria Sharapova joined Serena Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinals of the Sony Open Tennis by fighting for two and a half hours to overcome Sara Errani 7-5 7-5 and extend her winning streak in sets to 20, which is her personal record.

Aggressive Sharapova dictated the match, Errani answered with her versatile game, and we had a balanced and exciting encounter. Sharapova had an early 5-3 momentum in the first set, and despite her opponent’s comeback to 5-5, the third-seeded Sharapova won the opener 7-5. In the second set Sharapova was twice up a break, but Errani broke back each time and even had three set points at 5-4. Three winners, of Sharapova’s total of 45 in the match, saved all those set points and the Russian finished the match by winning eight of the last ten points. Errani is now 0-26 against Top 5 players.

Next for Sharapova is either Jelena Jankovic or Roberta Vinci. (source: WTA Tour, photo: © Neal Trousdale)
