Serena Williams downs Zheng Jie, sets up all-sister Wimbledon final

Serena Williams at Wimbledon 2008Sixth seed Serena Williams will play her elder sister Venus, seeded seventh, in Wimbledon finals for the third time, after ending an impressive run of China's world No.133 Zheng Jie. Final score: 6-2 7-6(5).

Williams’ serve was impressive throughout the semifinal and Zheng could barely win a point on her opponent’s serve. The exception to this rule was only the second part of the second set, when Zheng even managed to break strong Williams for a 4-2 lead. However, Zheng’s lead didn’t last long, Williams broke back right away. Zheng, however, had one more chance to stay in the match — when she had a set point to force the third set. Disappointingly, Zheng netted a backhand and Williams gave her no more such opportunities from then on. In the tiebreak, Williams scored victory on her first match point with Zheng double-faulting. Unfortunately, this was a poor end of Zheng's otherwise great performance. Read more »

Venus Williams gets past Elena Dementieva, moves into Wimbledon finals

Venus Williams at Wimbledon 2008Defending champion Venus Williams has reached the Wimbledon final for the seventh time after a confident 6-1 7-6(3) victory over fifth seed Elena Dementieva.

Dementieva was overpowered from the beginning, being broken right away in the first game, plus two times later on, and was no match for the fast-serving Williams in the opening set. The second set was a closer affair with Dementieva giving more resistance and forcing a tiebreak. However, the four-time Wimbledon champion earned three successive match points in the tiebreak and defeated the Russian on the first one.

Sixth seed Serena Williams defeated Polish teenager Agnieszka Radwanska with a dominant 6-4 6-0 victory. Fifth seed Elena Dementieva moved into the semifinals beating fellow Russian Nadia Petrova 6-1 6-7 (6-8) 6-3. Seventh seed Venus Williams advanced to the final four with a 6-4 6-3 victory over Grand Slam quarterfinal debutante Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn, who thrashed Jelena Jankovic in the fourth round.

Dementieva raced to win the first set 6-1 against Petrova and led 5-1 in the second but let the lead slip and needed a third set. Williams never looked in danger of falling victim to Tanasugarn, but nor did she really hit the heights.

Ana Ivanovic will remain No.1 after Wimbledon

Ana Ivanovic will remain No.1 after WimbledonWorld No.1 Ana Ivanovic lost in the third round of Wimbledon, but since her neighbors in the rankings Maria Sharapova, Jelena Jankovic, and Svetlana Kuznetsova also lost early, Ivanovic will stay No.1 when the rankings are updated next Monday after Wimbledon.

Ivanovic, however, will only narrowly hold onto her No.1 spot. Jankovic is projected to rise back to No.2, while Sharapova will fall to No.3, or potentially No.4 if Elena Dementieva, the highest seed left standing at Wimbledon, wins the title. (via On the Baseline, photo: Getty Images)
