Thirteenth-seeded Czech Nicole Vaidisova beat Italian Flavia Pennetta 6-2 7-6 (7-0) in the round two of the US Open.

I watched only the last part of the match, but I can say that Pennetta had her chances since her opponent was emotionally fragile at moments. What happened was that Vaidisova simply wasn’t able to finish the match when leading 6-5 in the second set. She wasted five match points and let Pennetta make a break. It left the Czech so frustrated and angry that she broke her racket. Pennetta evened the result to 6-6 in the second set, but was demolished in the tie-break by failing to score even one point. That was disappointing. I was hoping for the third set.

After all, the favorite was victorious and she will next play No.18 seed Shahar Peer of Israel. This should be a match worth watching.

American Ahsha Rolle, ranked 109th in the world, became famous for causing the first major upset at the US Open 2007 by beating No.17 seed Tatiana Golovin in the first round. However, the 22-year-old Rolle hasn’t stopped there. Wednesday night, she advanced to the third round with the victory over 57th-ranked Karin Knapp of Italy 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Ninth seed Daniela Hantuchova was upset 6-4 3-6 6-1 by Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko, another shock in the first round of the US Open.

The Slovak made 32 unforced errors as she suffered her earliest exit at Flushing Meadows since she lost on her debut in 2001.

Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced to the second round of the US Open on Tuesday with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Czech Klara Zakopalova. The fourth seed will next face either Camille Pin of France or Ukrainian qualifier Tatiana Perebiynis.

Seed No.17 Tatiana Golovin was upset in the opening round of the US Open by an American wildcard Ahsha Rolle 6-4 1-6 6-2. Unbelievable! Everyone thought that Golovin would certainly win this match, but instead, the Frenchwoman played one of her worst matches ever and is about to lose a lot of points because she was defending last year's quarterfinals.

Other seeds to fall on the day one were No.29 seed Samantha Stosur of Australia who lost to Alize Cornet of France 6-3 6-2, and No.25 seed Mara Santangelo of Italy who was defeated by Russian Vera Dushevina.
