Venus Williams reaches US Open quarterfinals, too strong for Ana Ivanovic

World number five Ana Ivanovic still hasn’t found the way to beat six-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams. In their fourth round match on Sunday, twelfth-seeded Williams won 6-4 6-2.

Ivanovic had no trouble defeating her opponents on the way to the round-of-16, but the reigning Wimbledon champion was too much for her. The 19-year-old Serb’s well-known forehand and serve were on a good level, but her net approaches were unsuccessful, which is 22 % compared to Venus’ 75 %. Read more »

Serena Williams advances to the US Open 2007 quarterfinals

Former champion Serena Williams beat Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli of France 6-3 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open on Sunday.

The eighth-seeded American lost her serve early in the match, but quickly recovered to defeat her opponent in 76 minutes, and set up a possible clash with world number one Justine Henin.

I was hoping that tenth-seeded Bartoli will at least take Williams to three sets, but I may see that some other time…

Maria Sharapova's interview after the loss to Agnieszka Radwanska at the US Open 2007

Defending champion Maria Sharapova was shocked by Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland to crash out of the US Open 2007 on Saturday.

I couldn't wait to read what Sharapova had to say about this disappointment. The most discussed thing about this third round match was Radwanska's excessive moving, or to say dancing, when receiving Sharapova's second serve. According to Maria, it didn't distract her. Moreover, she gave her opponent all the credit. Read the interview for the details.

  • Just talk about the last six games because it seemed like everything just fell part.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, although I won many games in a row after losing the first and being down 1-0, you know, you'd think I'd have the momentum in the third set with a break. But I just didn't really feel that way inside of me for some reason today. You know, just going to have those kind of days where you're always trying to come through and always trying to find a way even though you don't feel like things are exactly going your way. You know, that's just what happens. Read more »

Defending champion Maria Sharapova out in the third round of the US Open 2007

Thirtieth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland defeated defending champion and second seed Maria Sharapova 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 to reach the fourth round of the US Open 2007. Wow!

The biggest favorites for the title (Jankovic, Ivanovic, Henin, the Williams sisters) Sharapova couldn’t have faced before the final, since they are all in the upper half of the draw. But it seems that the draw was not easy enough for the Russian.

Sharapova didn’t display her best tennis in the match against the teenager from Krakow, as she made 12 double faults, and 49 unforced errors, while winning only 23% of the points on her second serve. The problems with the serve may be caused by the fact that she had to change her service motion because of a shoulder injury which has been bothering her during most part of the season. Read more »

Agnes Szavay upsets Nadia Petrova in straight sets at the 2007 US Open

Hungarian Agnes Szavay, ranked 31st in the world, defeated seventh-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia 6-4 6-4 to reach the fourth round of the 2007 US Open.

Petrova had treatment for a left hip injury late in the first set but she was outplayed by Szavay, who is celebrating her biggest success at a Grand Slam so far.

The 18-year-old Hungarian caught the attention of the tennis audience last week when she played in the final of the Pilot Pen Tennis presented by Schick in New Haven. Unfortunately, she had to retire from that match due to a back injury.

At the US Open, Agnes Szavay will next face world No.50 Julia Vakulenko of Ukraine.
