Jankovic overcomes Zheng, hair stays intact

Jelena JankovicSecond seed Jelena Jankovic advanced to the fourth round of the US Open with a hard-fought victory over Wimbledon semifinalist Jie Zheng of China, ranked 37th in the world. I’m joking about this "hair stays intact" part because of a recent funny statement of Jankovic (you can read it below).

As always, Jankovic had problems with holding her serve so being a break up wasn’t a big deal for the world No.2. You see, Jankovic converted eight break points, Zheng six. The Serb finished the match on her fifth match point with a final score 7-5 7-5. All those match points were in the final game of the second set which featured 11 deuces.

And here’s the part with Jankovic’s perfect hair. Haha, I read this quote yesterday. When asked what question she has never been asked but wants to answer Jankovic said: "They never ask me why my hair never moves. I use tons of hairspray because of my bangs. Even if I used 100 pins it would all fall out. So I wish they would ask me about my perfect hair!" Jelena, you’re a gem! :D

In the fourth round Jankovic will meet 14th seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus or Caroline Wozniacki, the Danish 21st seed. (photo via AFP)

Ana Ivanovic blames lack of practice for early exit at the US Open

Ana IvanovicWorld number one and top seed Ana Ivanovic was stunned by 188th-ranked Julie Coin in the second round of the US Open and it’s the earliest exit by women's top seed at the US Open since tennis turned professional in 1968. Ouch.

The 20-year-old Serb didn’t blame her recent thumb injury for the defeat, but rather her lack of match practice. She said her right thumb had totally recovered and she felt no pain.

Ivanovic is aware of the fact that she hasn't justified her top ranking: "If you are asking if I'm playing like a number one, no." However, she denies the pressure of being top ranked player was the problem.

Ana Ivanovic upset in US Open second round by Julie Coin

Ana Ivanovic at US OpenTop seed and world number one Ana Ivanovic of Serbia was shocked in the second round of the US Open falling to 188th-ranked Julie Coin of France 6-3 4-6 6-3.

Ivanovic was broken two times in the opening set, and although she played more steadily in the second and managed to stay in the match,  she couldn’t recover from getting 4-2 down in the decider and left the court with her head bowed.  You can’t expect anything else after 34 unforced errors.

Ivanovic’s first-round victory over Vera Dushevina wasn’t smooth, but I didn’t expect her to exit US Open so early. Still, I’m not too surprised.  Ivanovic had a thumb injury which forced her out of the Olympics and she didn’t enter the US Open in full form. Pressure was also a factor, I suppose, since she’s number one and top seed.

The 25-year-old Coin has now already won five matches at the US Open (she had to qualify for the event) and in the first round she beat world number 40 Casey Dellacqua. It’s worth mentioning that prior to this US Open Coin had never won a singles match in a Grand Slam.

In the third round Coin will face compatriot Amelie Mauresmo, seeded 32nd. (source: The New York Times, photo: Getty Images)

Venus Williams advances to round three at US Open

Venus WilliamsSeventh seed Venus Williams didn’t need to work much to get past Rossana De Los Rios of Paraguay and move into the third round of the US Open, the tournament she won in 2000 and 2001.

The five-time Wimbledon champion defeated her 113-ranked opponent in 59 minutes. Williams won 6-0 6-3 despite making 17 unforced errors and wasting four match points on her serve at 5-3 up before finally beating De Los Rios on the fifth.

Dinara Safina moves into US Open third round

Dinara SafinaRussian sixth seed Dinara Safina advanced to the third round of the US Open with a 6-4 6-3 victory over Roberta Vinci of Italy.

Roland Garros finalist Safina, who has won three WTA titles this season as well as silver medal at the Olympics, established a 3-0 lead in the first set and 3-1 in the second, but her inconsistency enabled world No.164 Vinci to break back and threaten a fightback.

Still, hard-hitting Safina extended her win-loss record since Wimbledon to 17-0 and will play Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky, ranked 60th, in round three. (source: Reuters, photo: Getty Images)
