Svetlana Kuznetsova beats Venus Williams in Miami quarterfinals

Svetlana Kuznetsova at the Sony Ericsson OpenSvetlana Kuznetsova defeated Venus Williams 6-4 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.

Kuznetsova’s victory spoiled the prospect of an all-Williams semifinal. So, instead of her older sister, Serena Williams, who beat Justine Henin in the Sony Ericsson Open quarters, will next face the Russian world No.4.

"I just felt a little bit off," said Venus, who has won the tournament in 1998, 1999 and 2001. "I didn't have the answers today, and she played well.

"I'm always happy for Serena to win. It would have been obviously very exciting for me to win too, but it just didn't happen." (via xinhuanet)

Serena Williams downs Justine Henin, reaches Miami semifinals

Serena Williams reaches Miami semifinalsSerena Williams dominated world No.1 Justine Henin in the quarterfinal of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. Final score 6-2 6-0.

In the beginning, games were long and each one contained break points. However, eighth-seeded Williams scored at more important moments and established a 3-0 lead. Even though Henin afterwards won her service game for the first time and returned the break, her luck was short-lived. From that point on, every game up until the end of the match went into Serena’s hands!

Top-seeded Henin seemed frightened and timid, while Williams went towards her goal focused and strong. Well, who can blame Henin for being afraid. Last year she lost to Serena in the Sony Ericsson Open final, having won the first set 6-0. And that's not all. Serena has collected four titles at the Sony Ericsson Open, while Jusine's 41 career titles don't include one from the tournament in Miami. (photo via Getty Images)

Jelena Jankovic advances in Miami, beats Lucie Safarova

Jelena JankovicFourth seed Jelena Jankovic advanced to the fourth round of the Sony Ericsson Open with a 6-2 6-1 victory over often-hard-to-beat Lucie Safarova.

Unlike her compatriot Ana Ivanovic, who cruised into the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open, Jelena Jankovic had to work hard and save five match points. However, on Sunday, in the third round, Ivanovic was dumped out of the tournament by Lindsay Davenport in two quick sets, while Jankovic advanced without problems. You just never know.

Lindsay Davenport crushes Ana Ivanovic at Sony Ericsson Open

Lindsay DavenportFormer world No.1 Lindsay Davenport beat one of the favorites for the Sony Ericsson Open title, second seed Ana Ivanovic. Can Davenport's return get any better?

Davenport, who has great appreciation for Ivanovic, confidently beat the Indian Wells champion 6-4 6-2 in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open and ended the Serb's hardcourt campaign.

As they say on Ivanovic’s website, "Davenport simply did not miss." The American started strong and controlled the match. World No.2 Ivanovic showed some brief signs of resistance, but Davenport was simply unstoppable and completed victory in 77 minutes.

Jelena Jankovic saves five match points to advance at Sony Ericsson Open

Jelena JankovicI didn’t watch this match, but by the description of fellow tennis blogger Diane, I see Jelena Jankovic survived almost a similar challenge in the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open to the one in the Australian Open first round (remember Tamira Paszek's famous first match point against Jankovic?).

At the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, fourth seed Jankovic fought with every cell of her body against Sweden’s Sofie Arvidsson, ranked 63rd in the world. Jankovic was 1-5 in the third set, but broke her opponent twice to get to 5-all. Then it went to 6-all, and Jankovic found herself down 3-6 in the tiebreak. She then saved five match points, and at 9-10, broke Arvidsson, and won the match on her second match point. In the end, the score was 6-7 (7) 6-2 7-6 (9).

Jankovic will next face Czech world No.39 Lucie Safarova, who can be a tough opponent. I still remember their long encounter at last year’s Wimbledon, when Jankovic seemed hopeless, having no idea how to play against Safarova. In the end, however, the Serb won, because Safarova couldn’t keep her rhythm during a match that long.

Reminder: Sofie Arvidsson is having an excellent 2008 season. So far this year she defeated high-ranking players such as Elena Dementieva, Marion Bartoli and Anna Chakvetadze. (photo via Getty Images)

Ana Ivanovic, Lindsay Davenport to meet in third round of Sony Ericsson Open

Lindsay DavenportAna IvanovicAna Ivanovic and Lindsay Davenport advanced into the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open with comfortable wins and will next face each other.

Second-seeded Ivanovic defeated Frenchwoman Emilie Loit 6-1 6-2, while three-time Grand Slam champion Davenport beat another French player Camille Pin 6-2 6-1.

Ivanovic defeated world No.93 Loit in just 47 minutes. You can hardly finish a match faster than this. In addition, the Serb only dropped a total of six points on her own serve.

Davenport made her first appearance at the Tier I tournament in Miami after a five-year absence. In today’s match, Pin struggled with injury and Davenport said she realized Pin wasn’t able to run down as many balls as she could if she hadn’t been injured.
