WTA Tour announced Tournament of Champions – the Sony Ericsson Championships for losers, sort of

sewta_logo_square_sm1.jpgYou all know about the Sony Ericsson Championships, the tournament which marks the end of the tennis year, where the world's Top 8 singles players and Top 4 doubles teams from the season compete for the prestigious title. A week ago, the WTA Tour announced a somewhat similar tournament, called the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions, which will feature top Tour players who failed to qualify for the big thing, the Sony Ericsson Championships.

The highest-ranked ten players who have won at least one international event in singles during the season and who didn’t manage to qualify for the year-end Sony Ericsson Championships will play the tournament, along with two wildcards. They will compete in an innovative 12-woman round robin singles format (four groups of three players). Read more »

Elena Dementieva qualifies for Sony Ericsson ChampionshipsWorld number four Elena Dementieva has joined Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Serena Williams and Dinara Safina in qualifying for the Sony Ericsson Championships, the tournament which marks the end of the tennis year, where the world's Top 8 singles players and Top 4 doubles teams from the season compete for the title.

Olympic champion and US Open 2008 semifinalist Dementieva, who also clinched Dubai title, is currently ranked fifth in the Race to the Sony Ericsson Championships with 2,855 points.

Only three more spots remain in the singles draw of the tournament, as five spots have been taken. Maria Sharapova currently sits at No.6 with 2,515 points, followed by Venus Williams with 2,106 points and Svetlana Kuznetsova with 2,022 points.

The prestigious tournament will be held in Doha, Qatar from November 4-9, 2008. It will be the biggest tennis event ever to take place in the region.

Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic first to qualify for Sony Ericsson Championships

Serbian tennis stars Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic are the leaders in the Race to the Sony Ericsson Championships and have secured their participation in that prestigious event.

They currently occupay the first and second place in the Race to the Sony Ericsson Championships, with world No.2 Jankovic having earned 2,770 points and world No.1 Ivanovic 2,761 points.

The season-ending tournament will take place at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex in Doha, Qatar, from November 4-9, 2008. Six more singles players will qualify, as well as top four doubles teams of the season. (via On the Baseline)

Powerful Justine Henin wins Sony Ericsson Championships

Powerful Justine Henin wins Sony Ericsson ChampionshipsWorld number one Justine Henin continues her domination on the WTA Tour winning the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships for the second time and in that way collecting her tenth title of season.

Superior Justine Henin defeated determined Maria Sharapova 5-7 7-5 6-3 in a dramatic final lasting 3 hours and 25 minutes.

Sharapova won the first set characterized by a marathon twelfth game (Henin’s service game). The Belgian saved seven break/set points and there were ten deuces, but she couldn’t resist Sharapova pressure longer than that, and the fighting Russian took the first set 7-5.
