Daniela Hantuchova withdraws from French Open

Daniela HantuchovaWorld No.10 Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia has announced her withdrawal from the French Open. She has a stress fracture in her right foot. Hantuchova was hoping to be able to recover by the time of the claycourt Grand Slam, but that unfortunately hasn't happened.

Disappointed with the outcome she said:

A near heartbreaking day for me… After final consult with my team, I am sad to announce that I will be missing my first Roland Garros as a professional athlete. Every player’s dream is to compete in the Grand Slams and I so much wanted to make Paris happen. But I know I have to be patient as recovery from this type of injury takes time. Hopefully I will be strong and healthy to practice and play in full speed soon. I wish everyone all the best, lots of good tennis, and much love to all the fans!

Lindsay Davenport, Sania Mirza withdraw from French Open

Sania MirzaLindsay DavenportAmerican Lindsay Davenport and Indian Sania Mirza have withdrawn from the 2008 French Open which starts May 25 in Paris.

Davenport cited personal reasons, while Mirza withdrew because she has not yet recovered from her wrist surgery.

Tatiana Golovin, Na Li and Eleni Daniilidou had withdrawn earlier because of injuries and surgeries, and world No.10 Daniela Hantuchova will probably withdraw due to her foot injury.

The claycourt Grand Slam will be missing so many top players: Golovin is currently ranked 21st, Davenport 26th, Mirza 32nd, Daniilidou 35th, and Li 36th. Plus No.10 Hantuchova may be added to the list. And not to mention four-times French Open champion Justine Henin who retired from professional tennis just before her favorite Grand Slam. Tatiana Golovin won’t play Rome, Strasbourg and Roland Garros

Tatiana GolovinWorld No.21 Tatiana Golovin has withdrawn from the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, Internationaux de Strasbourg, and from her home Grand Slam, Roland Garros.

It's a pity, Golovin skipped Roland Garros last year too, the reason was an ankle injury. This year, she has withdrawn, presumably, because of a failure to recover completely from surgery — she had to remove a cyst from her hip. Well, at least Tati has a boyfriend to lick her wounds.

At this week’s Qatar Telecom German Open, Golovin lost in the first round, to Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark. The next tournament the Frenchwoman should be playing is the International Women's Open in Eastbourne. (via Women Who Serve, photo: Getty Images)
