Maria Sharapova said "Boo-hoo" on the possibility of losing No.1 ranking

Maria Sharapova at the 2008 French OpenWorld No.1 Maria Sharapova lost in the fourth round of the French Open to fellow Russian Dinara Safina, and could therefore lose the top ranking during the event to either Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic or Svetlana Kuznetsova. But here’s what Sharapova said about the situation: "Boo-hoo." Hahahaha, short and clear. I love Sharapova more every day.

The loss to Safina provoked another interesting response out of Sharapova. Masha was booed as she left the court after the defeat, but she said: "I can’t please everyone. That’s not in my ‘J.D.’ — not in my job description. I mean, they paid the ticket to watch me, so they must appreciate me on some level, right?" (via Tennis X, photo: Tennis Channel)

Maria Sharapova beaten by Dinara Safina at Roland Garros

Maria Sharapova at Roland Garros 2008Top seed Maria Sharapova of Russia had struggled for form in her opening three matches and eventually she fell to compatriot Dinara Safina 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 in the fourth round of the French Open.

No.13 seed Safina didn't make use of two set points she had in the opener, and in the second set she saved a match point, but in the end she beat the three-time Grand Slam champion.

Safina will next play the 2004 Roland Garros runner-up Elena Dementieva. Seventh-seeded Dementieva advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4 1-6 6-2 victory over fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva, seeded 11th.

The fourth-round match between Dementieva and Zvonareva was full of errors. There were 11 breaks of serve in their 25 games and the pair conjured up 78 unforced errors between them.

In the quarterfinals, Dementieva will be playing her third Russian opponent and therefore she feels as if she were not in France: "I feel like I'm playing a Russian championship not Roland Garros." (source: BBC, photo via Tennis Channel)

Ana Ivanovic storms into Roland Garros quarterfinals

The last year’s finalist in Paris advanced to the quarterfinals of Roland Garros scoring a 6-0 6-0 victory in 54 minutes. Let's just mention that Ivanovic won the first five games of the match in just 15 minutes. Yes, that was three minutes per game.

In the quarterfinals Ivanovic will face either Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik, seeded 27th, or Switzerland's Patty Schnyder, seeded 10th. (photo via Tennis Channel)

As for the match between Sharapova and Knapp, the first set, which lasted 81 minutes, suggested yet another tough encounter for the world No.1 Sharapova in Paris. However, the second set was a complete domination of the Russian and she advanced to the fourth round.

For a place in the quarterfinals third seed Jankovic will face Polish 14th seed Agnieszka Radwanska, and top seed Sharapova will meet compatriot Dinara Safina, seeded 13th. (source: Reuters, photos via Tennis Channel)
