Shoulder injury bothers Maria Sharapova again, US Open and Olympics participation uncertain

Maria SharapovaMaria Sharapova defeated Marta Domachowska 7-5 5-7 6-2 in her opening match at the Rogers Cup in Montreal but after the victory the three-time Grand Slam champion withdrew from the tournament with a shoulder injury which could prevent her from playing at the US Open and the Olympics.

The 21-year-old Sharapova will have an MRI scan and the test results will determine whether she will be able to compete at the US Open and the Olympics, two great events coming up in August.

The world No.3 twice required treatment on a right shoulder in the second-round match against Domachowska which was nearly three hours long, and Sharapova served 17 double-faults in that time. (source: BBC)

Ana Ivanovic advances at Rogers Cup in three sets

Ana IvanovicTop-ranked Ana Ivanovic passed the test of Petra Kvitova, defeating the Czech 6-3 4-6 6-3 in the second round of the Rogers Cup.

Ivanovic, who is unbeaten in the city of Montreal, having won there in 2006, overcame nine double faults and dropping her serve five times in her first meeting with world No. 64 Kvitova.

Ivanovic will need to make better result at the Rogers Cup than her competitors world No.2 Jelena Jankovic and No.3 Maria Sharapova in order to stay on the top of the rankings.

Nicole Vaidisova, Elena Dementieva lose in the first round of Montreal

Nicole VaidisovaSeed No.16 Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic and fifth seed Elena Dementieva of Russia were downed in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Elena DementievaVaidisova was defeated by Japanese veteran Ai Sugiyama 6-3 3-6 6-2, while Dementieva lost to Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova 6-4 6-2.
