Top seed Caroline Wozniacki evened her win-loss record in WTA singles finals to 7-7 by winning her second straight title at the MPS Group Championships in Florida. The world No.2’s opponent in the final was Belorussian Olga Govortsova.

The 52nd-ranked Govotsova failed to win her first singles title on the Tour, fell to 0-3 in finals on the pro circuit and lost her first ever match-up with Wozniacki. However, even though Wozniacki was a clear favorite in the final, Govortsova had a 4-1 lead in the second set, and a set point at 5-4. Still, she was defeated by the Dane 6-2 7-5.

The prize money the finalists took home is the same as in the other International-level tournament that ended today (with Flavia Pennetta as winner and Carla Suarez Navarro as runner-up), Woznicki earned $37,000 and Govortsova $19,000.
Top seed Caroline Wozniacki has advanced to the final of the MPS Group Championships with a victory over fourth-seeded Elena Vesnina 1-6 7-6 (4) 6-4. The defending champion and world No.2 Wozniacki rallied from a set down in this encounter with Vesnina, while last year, also at the semifinal stage of the same tournament, Vesnina had four match points before losing to Wozniacki in a third set tie-break.

Wozniacki’s opponent in the MPS Group Championships final will be unseeded Olga Govortsova, ranked 52nd in the world. Govortsova booked her place in the title match by upsetting third seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-4 7-5 in their first career meeting.

Govortsova will be looking for her first WTA singles title in her third such final. Wozniacki has played 13 WTA finals so far, and has won six. The Belorussian and the Dane have never played each other. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

Wozniacki and Wozniak both had difficult way to the final. Wozniak, the fifth seed, saved a match point in the quarterfinals against Tamira Paszek, while Wozniacki survived an even bigger scare, saving four match points against Elena Vesnina in the semifinals.

Maria Sharapova reached the finals of the Bausch & Lomb Championships for the first time, after her semifinal opponent Lindsay Davenport withdrew because of illness. In the final world No.5 and top seed Sharapova will meet one of my favorite rising stars, Slovakia’s Domika Cibulkova, ranked 34th.

Former world No.1 Davenport wasn’t feeling good after beating Agnes Szavay in the quarterfinals, and the day after, her health hasn't improved.

"I returned to my hotel where the doctor came to see me," said Davenport.

"Unfortunately, I was running a fever, had aches and pains and a headache. Those symptoms have worsened today."

The 18-year-old Cibulkova beat France's Alize Cornet 6-2 2-6 6-4 in the semifinals. Cibulkova was 0-9 against Top 20 players going into the Qatar Total Open in Doha in February. But then she beat No.12 Patty Schnyder and No.7 Venus Williams back-to-back, and so far at the Bausch & Lomb Championships she defeated three seeded players, one of them a Top 20 player: No. 14 seed Victoria Azarenka, No.2 Anna Chakvetadze and No.11 Amelie Mauresmo.
Sharapova recovered from squandering three set points in the first set tiebreak to beat the 10th seed 6-7 (9-11) 6-3 6-2. "Considering a couple of those set points I had, it should have been over in two sets," said the world No.5.

Sharapova’s previous match at the Bausch & Lomb Championships was also a struggle, as she needed more than three hours to triumph over Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Maria Sharapova will face Lindsay Davenport in Saturday's semifinal. The American advanced with a 6-4 7-6 (7-3) victory over Hungary’s Agnes Szavay.

The other semifinal will include unseeded Frenchwoman Alize Cornet (who advanced with a 6-4 6-2 win over compatriot Virginie Razzano) and the winner of the match Amelie Mauresmo vs. Dominika Cibulkova.

Third seed Daniela Hantuchova was upset by Croatian qualifier Karolina Sprem in the second round of the Bausch & Lomb Championships. Final score: 6-3 1-6 6-3.

Sprem is currently ranked 296th in the world, but she was once a top-20 player. Sprem injured her wrist at the Italian Open in May and returned to the tour only two weeks ago, when she fell in qualifying at the Sony Ericsson Open. This week Sprem won two qualifying matches, beat Japanese veteran Ai Sugiyama in her main draw opener, then stunned world No.10 Hantuchova for the third top-10 win of her career, and first since 2004.

Slovakia's Hantuchova thinks her loss is simply the outcome of Sprem’s good play: "I don't think I did too many things wrong. She was just playing incredible, going for every shot and almost everything going inside the court. Today she was just too good."

Other seeded players that have been knocked out of the Bausch & Lomb Championships so far include No.5 seed Patty Schnyder who lost to Elena Vesnina, No.9 Sybille Bammer who was defeated by Alize Cornet, No.14 Victoria Azarenka who fell to Dominika Cibulkova, and No.4 Marion Bartoli who succumbed to Olga Govortsova. Interestingly, all these upsets happened in three sets.
