Lindsay Davenport pregnant with second baby, no Australian Open

Lindsay DavenportJust days after we learnt that Lindsay Davenport would compete at the 2009 Australian Open, the news comes out that the American is pregnant with second child, and is therefore setting her career aside.

"Of course this unexpected but exciting surprise now means I will be putting tennis on hold for the foreseeable future," Davenport said in a statement issued Wednesday by her agent.

Davenport has a son, Jagger, who was born in June 2007. The three-time Grand Slam singles champion and former world number one then returned to the tour and added another four titles to her resume. (source: ESPN, photo: Getty Images)

Former world number four Jelena Dokic, who is working hard on her comeback, got upset on the second day of the round-robin Australian Open wildcard play-off.

The 25-year-old Dokic, who previously defeated Gold Coast teenager Sophie Letcher 6-3 6-0, fell to an emerging Australian talent Monica Wejnert 4-6 6-3 6-4 on day two, and so Dokic's hopes of obtaining a wildcard into Australian Open 2009 took a step back.

Maria Sharapova is expected to defend her Australian Open title in the Nike dress shown in the first picture. The asymmetrical white outfit is what the Russian is supposed to wear after the 2009 Australian Open.

Both pieces should look good on Maria. The dresses are not as glamorous as we're used to from the Russian, but those soft colors will suit her very well. (via Forty Deuce)

Serena Williams’ Nike 2009 Australian Open dress

Serena Williams’ Nike 2009 Australian Open dress

This pink Nike dress is what Serena Williams is supposed wear at the 2009 Australian Open.

The model certainly doesn’t even nearly present how the dress will look on Serena, but we can see that Nike went with classic look, similar to what we’re used to from adidas’ designs. Nothing extraordinary, but nice.

By the way, this was Serena’s last year’s outfit for the Australian Open. I find that one from 2008 more inventive than this new piece.

Lindsay Davenport doubtful for Australian Open, retirement possible?

Lindsay DavenportLindsay Davenport may skip the 2009 Australian Open, being troubled by a knee injury. The former world No.1 has not competed since the 2008 US Open and may even not play again professionally.

The news is according to Linda Pearce from The Age:

Lindsay Davenport is not expected to contest January's Australian Open. Still troubled by a knee injury, the 2000 champion at Melbourne Park is considered unlikely to play at tour-level again, having made a comeback in 2007 following the birth of her first child, Jagger.

Davenport gave retirement hints last year, while withdrawing from Wimbledon with the knee injury.

The American has won four singles titles since returning to tennis in 2007. She was awarded Comeback Player of the Year by the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour in March. (via On the Baseline)
