Top seed Elena Dementieva out of Eastbourne in the second round

Elena DementievaTop seed Elena Dementieva lost to Virginie Razzano 6-0 3-6 7-6(4) in the second round of the AEGON International in Eastbourne.

The world No.4 Dementieva was bageled after 21 minutes. In the second set she recovered her aggression, but missed her chances in the third-set tiebreak.

With No.7 seed Nadia Petrova also losing on Wednesday, more precisely retiring because of problems with her back, only two seeded players have reached the Eastbourne quarterfinals: eighth-seeded holder Agnieszka Radwanska and sixth seed Caroline Wozniacki. Anna Chakvetadze scores a Top 10 win, Jelena Jankovic victim

Jelena JankovicAnna Chakvetadze hadn’t scored a Top 10 win since February 2008, but she improved by beating world No.6 and third seed Jelena Jankovic, who followed fellow falling Serbian star Ana Ivanovic out of the AEGON International. Final score: 6-7(5) 6-3 6-2. Thankfully, unlike Ana, for Jelena we can at least say she was upset!

Not only is Jankovic still in the mud, and she lost in the first round of a tournament, but she lost to Anna Chakvetadze, who herself said "I am pleased with every win right now because it's very important to me to get back my confidence."

Jankovic has started losing in the very beginnings of tournaments, and plus, to insecure players. Chakvetadze had last defeated a Top 10 opponent when she beat Marion Bartoli at the Paris Indoor event.

Jankovic’s excuse for the defeat was the change of surface: "It was obviously my first match on grass." However, the 24-year-old also mentioned her worrying lack of motivation: "I'll play Wimbledon and then we'll see. At least I can take a few weeks off then. I wish I could take a break now. I need to get to where I want to play tennis again."

It could make Jankovic any better that second seed Svetlana Kuznetsova lost to Aleksandra Wozniak in straight sets 6-0 6-3, just days after lifting the French Open trophy, while fourth seed Vera Zvonareva fell to Amelie Mauresmo 6-3 1-6 6-3, in the opening round as well. Ana Ivanovic loses to Nadia Petrova in the first round of Eastbourne

Ana IvanovicAna Ivanovic’s career is still in free fall. The latest disappointment is that her Wimbledon preparations have been cut short as she lost to Nadia Petrova in the first round of the AEGON International in Eastourne.

We can’t call it an upset though, as Petrova is seeded seventh, while Ivanovic, who had fallen out of the Top 10 for the first time in about two years after Roland Garros, wasn't even seeded at the grass-court tournament. At least she put up a fight, and lost in three sets 6-1 4-6 6-4.

Ivanovic is not out of Eastbourne completely, although she will probably be very soon. The Serb is competing in doubles, partnered with Germany's Sabine Lisicki. They will play their first-round match against none other than top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber.

Lisicki was also defeated in singles today, losing 6-2 6-1 to Australian Samantha Stosur.

Top seed Elena Dementieva cruised past fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-2 6-2. Dementieva will next play Virginie Razzano, who comfortably beat fellow Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 7-6(3) 6-2. (photo: Stephane Martinache)

Ana Ivanovic to play doubles with Sabine Lisicki at Eastbourne

Ana IvanovicAna Ivanovic, who suffured a major slump in the rankings on Monday, falling from No.8 to No.13 after exiting the French Open in the fourth round as a defending champion, is scheduled to play doubles at the AEGON International.

The 21-year-old has been offered a wildcard into the Eastbourne doubles draw, and will be partnered with Germany's Sabine Lisicki, ranked 180th in doubles.

Ivanovic hasn't played a single doubles match on the Tour since last year, during which she played only one, and is currently unranked in doubles. Her career-high doubles ranking was No.50, in Septermber 2006, after having played several tournaments alongside Russian Maria Kirilenko.

Agnieszka Radwanska wins EastbourneAgnieszka Radwanska of Poland clinched the International Women's Open title at Eastbourne defeating Nadia Petrova 6-4 6-7 (11) 6-4 in today’s final.

Fourth-seeded Radwanska took the first set, but didn’t convert three match points in the second set and Petrova leveled on her fourth set point. The final set was also close, but the 19-year-old Radwanska secured the decisive break at 5-4 and served out for victory.

Winning her third title of the year, after Pattaya and Istanbul, world No.11 Radwanska joins Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova as the only players to have won three titles in 2008. (source: BBC, photo via Yahoo)
