Venus and Serena Williams clinch US Open doubles title

Venus and Serena Williams won their 10th Grand Slam doubles title together and their third this season.

The fourth-seeded Williams sisters, who have already won the Australian Open and Wimbledon doubles titles this year, defeated top seeds and number ones Cara Black and Liezel Huber 6-2 6-2 in the 2009 US Open final.

In singles, both Venus and Serena lost to eventual champion Kim Clijsters. Venus was upset in the fourth round, while Serena controversially exited the tournament in the semifinals. (photo via BBC)

Kim Clijsters spices up US Open 2009, overpowers Venus Williams to reach quarters

Kim Clijsters spices up US Open 2009, overpowers Venus Williams to reach quartersFormer world No.1 Kim Clijsters of Belgium, playing her first major and only her third tournament since returning to the Tour after a two-year-long break, crossed a big obstacle in the form of American third seed Venus Williams to progress to the quarterfinals of the 2009 US Open.

It was a strange match. The 2005 US Open champion Clijsters was winning game by game to unexpectedly bagel Williams in the first set. Then, again unexpectedly, the 2000 and 2001 US Open champion Williams bageled Clijsters in the second set. Such course of events made the third set totally unpredictable. However, in that final set Clijsters made what to proved to be a decisive break in the third game of the set, and even though Williams had two break points to level at 5-5 Clijsters held her serve and won the set 6-4.

Therefore, the final score was 6-0 0-6 6-4.

Clijsters' opponent in the quarterfinals will be No.18 seed Li Na of China, whom she leads 3-1 in career meetings. (photo via Life.com)

Safina or Sanowa? Richard Williams would say "whatever"

Richard WilliamsRichard Williams, the father of Serena and Venus Williams, is either playing a game on us or he really can’t remember the name of the top-ranked women’s tennis player.

"I think she's playing great tennis," Richard said about Dinara Safina. "I think she deserves to be No. 1. I'll tell ya something else, no one wants to play Sanowa, or whatever her name is. That girl hits that ball."

Is it possible that he can’t remember the simple word "Safina"? Hehe, whatever, he made me laugh, plus, Safina received a compliment – so it's all good. (Observer via Forty Deuce)

Venus Williams upset by Kateryna Bondarenko at the Rogers Cup

Venus WilliamsThird seed Venus Williams has crashed out of the Rogers Cup, falling to qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko 1-6 7-5 6-4 in the second round.

Williams had a bye in the first round and easily won the first set against the Ukrainian world No.64. And even though Williams started the match so well, she somehow managed to produce 60 unforced errors (as I read over at Forty Deuce).

The winner of 41 singles titles had made a fine start to the hardcourt season by reaching the Bank of the West Classic final, which she lost to Marion Bartoli. Last week, she lost at the first hurdle in the form of Flavia Pennetta, and that defeat is also understandable. But this week at the Rogers Cup Williams has already become the biggest upset of the tournament. Not promising ahead of the US Open.

Clijsters makes Kuznetsova her third Top 20 victim, Venus Williams upset in Cincinnati

Kim Clijsters at the Western & Southern Financial Group WomenWildcard Kim Clijsters is still doing impressively well in her comeback after a two-year-long break and a child birth, scoring her third Top 20 victory in three matches she played since returning to competitive tennis at the Western and Southern Financial Group Women's Open. Third seed Venus Williams fell to No.14 seed Flavia Pennetta in the third round.

Clijsters started her third-round match with a 4-1 lead, and even though sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova leveled at 4-4, the Belgian won the set 6-4. We can safely say that Kuznetsova was saved by the challenge system in the second set. Clijsters was leading 3-0, and then 4-3, and just when we thought she broke Kuznetsova for 5-3, the Hawk-eye system said Kuznetsova's ball was in and in the end she leveled at 4-4 to eventually win the set. Still, Clijsters triumphed in the decider to defeat the sixth-ranked Russian, after victories over No.13 Marion Bartoli and No.20 Patty Schnyder.

No.14 seed Pennetta defeated third seed Venus Williams 7-6(2) 6-4 and extended her winning streak to 14 matches. The Italian won back-to-back titles in Palermo and Los Angeles, and has now reached the quarterfinals of Cincinnati.

Clijsters might face world No.1 Dinara Safina in the quarterfinals, while Pennetta, who is now 4-3 against Williams, will next play Daniela Hantuchova, the winner over seventh seed Vera Zvonareva in the third round.
