The 29-year-old Schnyder earned her 11th Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title with her 500th career victory. The Swiss veteran had lost seven straight WTA finals since lifting her last trophy in Cincinnati three years ago.

The winner gave the 17-year-old Paszek full credit and tipped her as a future star. "She pushed me all the way," said Schnyder. "I had to do my best and move well."

The 94th-ranked Paszek, who reached the Bali final by upsetting top seed Daniela Hantuchova in the semis, as well as third and seventh seeds Flavia Fennetta and Sara Errani in earlier rounds, failed to win her second career title following success in Portoroz in 2006.
Schnyder downed number four seed Nadia Petrova 7-5 6-1 to reach the Bali final, while Paszek beat Daniela Hantuchova 6-2 5-7 6-4 to advance to her second career final. The Slovakian faced more late disappointment in Bali as she was defeated by American Lindsay Davenport in the final of the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic last year.

Schnyder and Paszek are tied at 1-1 in career meetings. The first time they played Paszek won in three sets, it was at the 2007 US Open. Schnyder won their second clash in straight sets; it was this year in Doha.

Schnyder will be playing for her 11th career title, Paszek for her second.

The 2008 Bali champion will collect $35,000.
The 17-year-old Paszek, who I thought would continue her last year's rise this season, won just three matches since the Australian Open and had gone five tournaments without a victory until a first-round win last week in Los Angeles. But now she managed to take out a top-ranked player.

Playing her first match since Wimbledon, Ivanovic was far from a player that won the French Open in May and triumphed on the same Canadian hardcourt two year ago. The 20-year-old Serb was bothered by an inflamed right thumb and the pain made her consider a visit to Europe to see a doctor rather than going directly to the Beijing Olympics. I hope her participation in the Olympics won't have the same destiny like Maria Sharapova's.

Ivanovic’s early loss in Montreal gave world No.2 Jelena Jankovic another chance to become the new No.1. Last week in Los Angeles Jankovic had a chance to grab the No.1 spot in the rankings, but Dinara Safina postponed her switch with No.1 Ana Ivanovic. Jankovic is now 88 points behind Ivanovic and can nudge her out of top spot by making it to the Rogers Cup final. (source: Reuters, photo: Getty Images)

Casey Dellacqua made the headlines in January, as she reached the fourth round of the Australian Open.

May be strange but the best point of the recently finished Australian Open happened in the first round, and on the first day. It was in the match between third seed Jelena Jankovic and rising star Tamira Paszek, on Paszek's first match point, in the third set at 5-4. During the point, there were at least three occasions when I though it was over for Jankovic. But, she defended so well and stayed in the match eventually winning 2-6 6-2 12-10.

Jankovic could have lost in the first round, but her fighting and extreme determination won the match, and in the end she turned out to be the semifinalist, beating even defending champion Serena Williams in the quarters!

Third seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia advanced to the second round of the Australian Open after a long and totally undecided encounter with Austrian prodigy Tamira Paszek.

Except for a few moments in the match when she really shined, Jankovic made lots of double faults and unforced errors, easily lost her service games, nothing went her way, and on top of all that, struggled with the injury she sustained in the Hopman Cup. The 17-year-old Paszek, on the other hand, was strong, her shots were fast and precise, and overall played much better.

So why didn’t Paszek win? In short — Jankovic is a fighter, Paszek is still inexperienced. I think Paszek definitely played good enough to win this match, after all she had three match points, but she was too inexperienced to take the last step and officially finish it. Jankovic, on the other hand, never gave up, and survived numerous hopeless situations in the match; her constant prayers might have helped as well.

First set: Horrible start for Jankovic who made many unnecessary mistakes, while Paszek returned every ball. Jankovic’s game was so helpless that she seemed ashamed of her performance. Let's just say this, in the first set Jankovic’s first serve percentage was 38, she doubled-faulted 6 times and made 20 unforced errors.

Second set: Jankovic improved in the second set, having a few shining moments where she showed her expertise. In the fourth game of the set Jankovic broke Paszek's serve. It was not at all easy for Jankovic to hold her own serve, but she battled and took the match to the decider.

Third set: Well, this one was long and painful to watch for the fans of both players. At first, it seemed that Jankovic could pack her bags as Paszek made two breaks at the start of the deciding set for a 3-0 lead. But no, Jankovic didn't want to say goodbye. JJ was fighting, but still not well enough to level the result completely, so Paszek served for the match at 5-4. And that's when we had a heart-stopping moment. On Paszek's first match point, Jankovic was running all over the court, and her fierce determination and a considerable amount of luck, let her stay in the match. Three times during this point I thought it was over for Jankovic, but no! Amazing! Now we're at 5-all. What followed was not less exciting. Jankovic immediately lost her serve and Paszek earned herself another two match points. Jankovic returned to the match, but simply couldn’t hold her serve, and never took full advantage of the opportunity. In short, we had a series of breaks — in this set only 7 out of 22 games were not breaks! Finally, at 10-all JJ held her serve and then used her second match point to break Paszek and reach the second round of the Australian Open.

After three hours and ten minutes Jankovic won 2-6 6-2 12-10 and fell to her knees. (photo via Getty Images)
