Serena Williams has another chance to overtake Dinara Safina at the top of the rankings. The one who goes further at the ongoing China Open will be No.1 after the tournament.

Both the No.1 Safina and the No.2 Williams progressed to the second round of the $4.5-million, Premier-level event. Safina defeated Roberta Vinci 6-4 6-4, while Williams followed with a 7-5 6-4 victory over Kaia Kanepi.

If Serena doesn’t do it this time, I think it would be fair for her and the rest of the world to completely stop discussing Dinara and her top ranking. Am I right? (photos: our reader Jacob)

Williams sisters qualify for Sony Ericsson Championships in doubles

Serena and Venus Williams huggingVenus and Serena Williams have for the first time in their doubles career qualified for the doubles event at the Sony Ericsson Championships.

"I love playing doubles with Venus as we have so much fun on the court. This year, we actually decided to put more emphasis on our doubles careers and going to Doha has been on our mind all season," said Serena, who has already qualified for the singles event at the season-ending Championships.

During the 2009 season the Williams sisters have won three Grand Slam doubles titles (Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open) and a title at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford.

Serena Williams is featured in a new campaign for Tampax, Procter & Gamble’s tampons. The advertisements and online videos show Mother Nature and her "monthly gift" attempting to throw Serena off her game – on and off the tennis court.

The ads will appear in October 2009. Here is a video featuring behind-the-scenes footage of Serena Williams and Mother Nature facing off.

Serena Williams donates prize for Sophie's Voice Foundation

Serena WilliamsSerena Williams is involved in an auction and all proceeds will benefit Sophie's Voice Foundation, which advocates for individuals with spina bifida.

Serena will give a 30-minute tennis lesson in West Palm Beach, Florida, that includes roundtrip coach airfare for two and one night hotel stay, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

Sophie's Voice Foundation was founded in 2008 by actors Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker in honor of their daughter, Sophie, who was diagnosed with spina bifida at birth.

Fans can place their bids in the auction at Charity Buzz until October 15, 2009.

Venus and Serena Williams won their 10th Grand Slam doubles title together and their third this season.

The fourth-seeded Williams sisters, who have already won the Australian Open and Wimbledon doubles titles this year, defeated top seeds and number ones Cara Black and Liezel Huber 6-2 6-2 in the 2009 US Open final.

In singles, both Venus and Serena lost to eventual champion Kim Clijsters. Venus was upset in the fourth round, while Serena controversially exited the tournament in the semifinals. (photo via BBC)
