Group shot pre-Wimbledon party
Wimbledon is just days away and the annual party celebrating the tournament was held at the Roof Gardens in West London's Kensington last night. As usual, the WTA players gave their best to look good and glamorous, and oh well, as usual, their success was sporadic.

Let's start with the bright examples. Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova were spot on. Their dresses are perfect fits and just right for the occasion.

Maria Sharapova’s dress I’ve already talked about, and now I’ll just say that its official name is apparently the Lawn Rose Dress and its inspired by English rose petals.

Defending champion Serena Williams will wear the Control Lawn Dress, inspired by the Wimbledon tradition of strawberries and cream. The dress features piping in Voltage Cherry against the traditional white palette.

Serena and Venus win fourth straight Grand Slam together

Serena and Venus Williams win Roland Garros 2010

Top seeds Serena and Venus Williams defeated seeds No.12 Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik 6-2 6-3 in the French Open doubles final and became only the third doubles partnership in the history of women’s tennis to win four consecutive Grand Slams. The sisters started the succession with the 2009 Wimbledon doubles title, and followed it up with the 2009 US Open, 2010 Australian Open and 2010 French Open.

Not only did the Williamses win their 12th Grand Slam title together, and their second French Open one, but they have also assured to be ranked No.1 in the new doubles rankings. This implies that Serena will be top-ranked in singles and doubles at the same time, which is the feat that only five other women’s players managed to achieve.

Additional info: Katarina Srebotnik may have lost the women's doubles final, but she captured the mixed doubles crown with Nenad Zimonjic. (photo: © FFT)

Venus and Serena advance on Day 6 of the French Open

Serena Williams at the 2010 French Open

It took top seed and world No.1 Serena Williams just 55 minutes to win her second round match against Julia Goerges 6-1 6-1 at the 2010 French Open. Serena made no double faults in the encounter postponed by rain, compared to Goerges’ five, and hit just four unforced errors, compared to Goerges’ 20. Serena’s opponent in the third round will be seed No.29 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat Jill Craybas 6-4 6-1.

Second-seeded Venus Williams also advanced, but to the fourth round, with a 6-3 6-4 victory over No.26 seed Dominika Cibulkova. The Slovakian played the semifinals last year in Paris, and entered the match with a 1-0 record against Venus, but the American hit 20 winners, twice as many as Cibulkova, and reached her first fourth round at the French Open since 2006.

Maria Sharapova and Justine Henin won their second rounds stopped by darkness yesterday and ensured a blockbuster third round match at the French Open. Both Sharapova and Henin advanced with the score 6-3 6-3: the 12th-seeded Sharapova defeated Kirsten Flipkens, the 22nd-seeded Henin defeated Klara Zakopalova. (photo: Stephane Martinache)

Venus wins and secures No.2 ranking, Serena loses in Madrid

Venus and Serena Williams

Venus and Serena Williams both played their third-round matches at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open on Wednesday, but with different outcomes.

The fourth-seeded Venus lost the first set against seed No.15 Francesca Schiavone, but was dominant in the remainder of the match to win 3-6 6-1 6-2.

Serena, who barely survived her match against Vera Dusevina in the previous round, played her third-round right after older sister Venus and fell to No.16 seed Nadia Petrova 4-6 6-2 6-3. The world No.1 Serena was playing only her second tournament since winning the Australian Open in January.

Venus’ win is securing her to move one spot up in the rankings, from No.3 to No.2, which means that the Williams sisters will occupy the Top 2 spots for the 46th week in their careers when the new rankings are released on Monday. Venus hasn’t been in the Top 2 since 2003. (photo: Emmett Anderson)

Serena Williams wins longest career match against Vera Dushevina at Madrid Open

Serena WilliamsWorld No.1 Serena Williams escaped the fate of her Rome appearance where she fell to Jelena Jankovic despite having two match points and advanced to the third round of the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open by battling past 43-ranked Vera Dushevina.

The match at the Premier-level tournament in Madrid lasted almost three and a half hours and included three tiebreaks to finish with a score 6-7(2) 7-6(5) 7-6(5). The twelve-time Grand Slam champion’s career is sure rich in experience, but her today’s much against  the Russian winner of one WTA title is the longest match of her long career.

The top-seeded Williams had three set points in the first set before losing it, then fought off a match point in the second, and in the third set she wasted a 5-2 lead only to see herself trailing 4-0 in the deciding tiebreak. However, the top-seeded Williams eventually defeated Dushevina after a close and long match. (photo: Stephane Martinache)

Jelena Jankovic downs both Williamses, edges Serena to reach Rome final

Jelena JankovicSeventh seed Jelena Jankovic became the seventh player to beat both the Williams sisters in one tournament, having thrashed Venus 6-1 6-0 in yesterday’s quarterfinal and now beating world No.1 Serena to advance to the final of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome.

The world No.7 Jankovic, who is aiming for her third Rome title after winning here in 2007 and 2008, won the semifinal against top-seeded Serena Williams 4-6 6-3 7-6(5) after 2 hours 47 minutes and a third-set tiebreak.

In the first set Serena had one crucial break to win 6-4. Jankovic then broke Serena to love two times to take the second set 6-3. Then Jankovic seemed to be losing the decider, but came back from a set down to win tense tiebreak with an equally tense score 7-5.

Everyone is hoping for a repeat of old Serbian glory, and even though we can already taste it, we could have an opportunity for a real celebration if Rome would see an all-Serbian final. But for that, Ana Ivanovic has to overcome Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez which will not be an easy task. (photo: Sony Ericsson WTA Tour)
