Sharapova's, Pennetta's and Ivanovic's Wimbledon 2010 dresses

Thanks to our reader Jacob we have information about the most probable fashion choices of Nike and adidas for their players and the upcoming Wimbledon.

Nike Women's Maria Sharapova Striking Lawn Dress 2010

Maria Sharapova will wear the Striking Lawn Dress. The Russian is apparently still in the mood for layers and elegant dresses. Personally, I preferred her other phases, but I can’t say her recent designs have been bad. The straps of this white Wimbledon dress are crossing at the back.

adidas Women's adilibria Dress 2010

Much more appealing to me is the dress that Ana Ivanovic and Flavia Pennetta will most probably wear – adidas’ Women's adilibria Dress. Again, at first glance it looks more sporty and simple than Sharapova's Nike, and I prefer the cleaner lines. This dress is also available in pink, and looks even better than the white version. Justine Henin edges Maria Sharapova to reach Roland Garros fourth round

Justine HeninThe third round match between Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova was suspended due to darkness on Saturday, with each player having won one set, and when the play resumed today Henin had the edge and defeated Sharapova 6-2 3-6 6-3. If the third set had been played on Saturday, Sharapova could have gone all the way to victory, but as her momentum was stopped, pretty unsurprisingly the four-time French Open champion Henin won. However, Sharapova can be proud of the fact that she became the first player to take a set from Henin at Roland Garros in five years.

The 22nd-seeded Henin, who extended her winning run at Roland Garros to 24 matches, will play seventh seed Samantha Stosur in the fourth round.

Fifth seed Elena Dementieva became the first player to enter the quarterfinals of the 2010 French Open, with a 6-1 6-2 victory over South African qualifier Chanelle Scheepers, ranked 131st, who had upset Gisela Dulko earlier in the tournament. Dementieva’s opponent in the quarters will be either Venus Williams or Nadia Petrova.

Maria Kirilenko, the winner over defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round, was beaten by Francesca Schiavone 6-4 6-4. Schiavone's next opponent will be the winner of the match between Caroline Wozniacki and Flavia Pennetta. (photo: Ralf Reinecke)

Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova waiting for the deciding set

Justine HeninMaria Sharapova at the 2010 French Open

The clash of the week between Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova in the third round of the French Open was suspended at 6-2 3-6 as the darkness and lurking rain would ensure the third set could not be finished on the Court Philippe Chatrier.

The four-time champion Henin, seeded 22nd this year, was in command during the first set. Sharapova didn’t convert any of her four break points, while Henin used both her chances to break and won the first set 6-2. Sharapova was trying, but wasn’t aggressive enough and hit three winners in comparison to Henin’s nine.

The 12th-seeded Russian then revived her aggression in the second set, and finally converted a break point, her eighth, to take a 5-3 lead and serve for the set. That final game of the second set Sharapova won to love.

Afterwards, today’s part of the match ended, on Sharapova's momentum, but tomorrow is another day and the final outcome is absolutely uncertain. (photos: Ralf Reinecke, Stephane Martinache)

Venus Williams raised many eyebrows by her lingerie-like black dress. But the dress raises all the eyebrows when in action!

Romania's Sorana CirsteaSerbia's Ana Ivanovic

Sorana Cirstea lost on Day one to Svetlana Kuznetsova, but her adidas dress can win all the awards, if you asked me. Just like Ana Ivanovic's.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands is wearing her cool tube socks and looks sporty. Well, Venus took Bethanie's role of ball boy distractor. Caroline Wozniacki, nice dress but nothing new, really nothing. Read more »

Maria Sharapova wins title on Strasbourg clay

Maria SharapovaTop seed Maria Sharapova has made an excellent introduction to the French Open, which starts tomorrow, with a title at the claycourt International-level tournament in Strasbourg.

The Russian reached the final by defeating fifth seed and three-time Strasbourg champion Anabel Medina Garrigues, and then went on all the way to the title with a 7-5 6-1 win over first-time WTA finalist Kristina Barrois.

The Internationaux de Strasbourg title is the 22nd singles title in Sharapova’s career and her first on red clay. The world No.13 is $37,000 richer now.

In the first round of the French Open, No.12 seed Sharapova will play Russian qualifier Ksenia Pervak, ranked 110th in the world. Four-time French Open champion Justine Henin could be Sharapova’s opponent in the third round. (photo: sr_cranks)

Sharapova makes Strasbourg final, Alexandra Dulgheru spoils all-Chinese final in Warsaw

Maria SharapovaTop seed Maria Sharapova defeated Germany’s Julia Georges 7-6(2) 6-1 in the delayed quarterfinal of the Internationaux de Strasbourg this morning, and then beat three-time Strasbourg champion Anabel Medina Garrigues in the afternoon to advance to the final. Sharapova scored a 4-6 6-2 6-2 victory over Medina Garrigues and will face Germany's Kristina Barrois in the final. The world No.77 Barrois, who defeated Vania King 2-6 6-2 7-6(6) in the semifinals, will play her first WTA final and will have a chance to become the first German winner of the tournament since Steffi Graf in 1997.

At the Polsat Warsaw Open, Romania’s Alexandra Dulgheru spoiled the hopes of an all-Chinese final by defeating Li Na, at No.3 the highest seed left in the draw. The 32nd-ranked Dulgheru is now 12-0 at the Polsat Warsaw Open and is looking for her second title at the tournament (which would also be her second career WTA title).  To reach that goal Dulgheru will have to get past fifth seed Zheng Jie of China, who put an end to Greta Arn's successful week in the second semifinal with a 6-4 7-5 win. If Zheng wins the Polsat Warsaw Open, she will become the first Chinese to win a Premier-level title. (photo: Stephane Martinache)

Dementieva upset in Warsaw, Sharapova cruises in Strasbourg

Elena DementievaSecond seed Elena Dementieva suffered her third loss in five matches of the European clay season, falling to Bulgarian qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova at the Polsat Warsaw Open. Maria Sharapova’s warm-up for the French Open is doing good, as the Russian lost only three games to advance at the Internationaux de Strasbourg, another tournament played this week.

Dementieva lost her second-round match at the Premier-level event to the world No.100 Pironkova 7-5 4-6 6-4 after almost three hours of play. The Russian was twice a break up in the deciding set, but didn’t manage to use that advantage to the full and handed Pironkova her fourth Top 10 win.

Sharapova was made to work in her first match at the International-level event in Strasbourg, but the top seed had a straightforward victory in the second round, defeating qualifier Dia Evtimova 6-3 6-0. Sharapova’s opponent in the quarterfinals will be world No.81 Julia Goerges, who upset No.6 seed Sybille Bammer 6-1 7-6(6). (photo: Stephane Martinache)

Maria Sharapova made to work, but advances to Strasbourg second round

Maria Sharapova

A little more than a week ago, at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open, Maria Sharapova lost the first match of her return from elbow injury. The Russian's her next appearance, which was today at the Strasbourg International, brought the Russian a much needed victory, and her first one since March and Indian Wells.

The top-seeded Sharapova fought for two hours and 14 minutes to defeat world No.67 Regina Kulikova 6-3 3-6 6-1 and advance to the second round of the $220,000 event in France.

"Regina has a similar game to mine – big first serve, hits pretty big and attacks. I played well enough to win. It was a high-quality match, especially for a first round," said three-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova, who is hoping to use the Strasbourg tournament to tune up for the French Open.
