Radwanska wins title as Sharapova loses fourth final in Miami

World No.4 Agnieszka Radwanska defeated world No.2 Maria Sharapova 7-5 6-4 in the final of the Sony Ericsson Open, a match in which both the players displayed outstanding consistent tennis, mental focus, great attacks and defence. What decided the result were just a couple more lapses on Sharapova's side.

Those lapses, however, have brought a huge black cloud over Miami in the Russian's case, as this is her fourth loss in the final of the tournament. Radwanska, on the other hand, boasts an amazing 26-4 win-loss record this year, and unbelievably, all the four losses came at the hands of world No.1 Victoria Azarenka. After Azarenka, Radwanska is the most successful player so far this season.

The first set of the final was tight, as Sharapova and Radwanska held their serves up until the twelfth game. Even though it was Sharapova who was more solid on her serve throughout the set, generally holding it more easily then her opponent, and even though Sharapova earned an opportunity to take Radwanska's serve on two occasions, the first to shake up the match was Radwanska, earning her first three break points of the match in that twelfth game and converting the third one. Actually, more than earning those chances it was Sharapova who handed her the game with erratic shots. A huge advantage in winners, 16-1, was not enough for Sharapova to take the lead.

The second set followed the same pattern – there was no break of serve until the end, when Radwanska earned two break/match points at 5-4 and used the first one to seal victory.

To win Miami, her ninth career title, after a first-round bye, Radwanska defeated Madison Keys, Silvia Soler-Espinosa, Garbine Muguruza Blanco, Venus Williams, Marion Bartoli and finally Maria Sharapova, all in straight sets.

Maria Sharapova first into Miami final

Maria Sharapova reached her fourth final at the Sony Ericsson Open by beating Caroline Wozniacki 4-6 6-2 6-4 in the semis. We’ll see whether the Russian will manage to win her first title in Miami, against Marion Bartoli or Agnieszka Radwanska.

It was Sharapova who broke first in every set against Wozniacki, and in the match as a whole she earned as much as 16 break points, converting six of them. In the beginning, Sharapova dictated the encounter and broke Wozniacki twice, but in the second half of the set Sharapova’s errors mounted and she handed the set to the Dane. In the second set Sharapova raced to a 4-0 lead, and this time she held on her advantage to go to the third set against Wozniacki for the first time in their five meetings.

The third set was tight as Sharapova worked her way to 5-2. Wozniacki approached by winning the next two games, but Sharapova ultimately served out victory in a dramatic last game involving a delicate situation with the umpire’s overrule of Sharapova’s supposed double fault. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

Sharapova reportedly sets wedding date for November

Maria Sharapova got engaged to Sasha Vujacic in October 2010, and there was a long period of silence, no mention of the wedding. Finally, we have a new piece of information, revealing that the couple is supposedly planning to get married on November 10th, 2012, in Istanbul.

Maria and Sasha picked the Turkish metropolis probably because it's convenient for them, given that Sasha plays basketball in Istanbul, while Maria's WTA Championships will take place October 23-28 in the city.

Unstoppable Victoria Azarenka wins Indian Wells

World No.1 Victoria Azarenka powered to her fourth title of the season, extending her perfect 2012 win-loss record to 23-0, with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Maria Sharapova in the final of Indian Wells. Azarenka is now 5-3 against Sharapova, and four of those five victories came in finals, all in straight sets, while the last was the 2012 Australian Open final which Azarenka won 6-3 6-0.

In today's title match, Sharapova won only three service games and made 37 unforced errors to Azarenka's 14. The match was Azarenka's from start to finish, except for Sharapova's brief interruptions of Azarenka's streak in the middle of the second set, when Sharapova made two breaks.

The most difficult match of Azarenka's run to the Indian Wells title was her opener against Mona Barthel, a three-setter with two tiebreaks. In the third round Azarenka ousted Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-1 6-2, then she beat Julia Goerges 6-3 6-1 in the fourth round, crushed Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinals 6-0 6-2, and Angelique Kerber 6-4 6-3 in the semis.

Editor's update: My appologies for no updates on the semifinals, I was struck by some virus, and wasn't able to write. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)
