US Open women's fashion celebrates Kim Clijsters and the color of yellow, semifinalists all in Nike

Grand Slam are always the most exciting venues for tennis glamour and the US Open is the unofficial fashion queen of all the four majors, so let's see what the best brands put on their brightest WTA stars.

Let's start this fashion overview with maybe not the biggest fashion star, but definitely the player who marked this US Open – Kim Clijsters, whose inspiring career has come to a close at her favorite tournament where she had lifted the trophy three times. To honor the Belgian's last event, her clothing sponsor Fila produced a special collection with a symbolic star pattern.

Ana Ivanovic (who reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal since her title win at Roland Garros 2008), Angelique Kerber (last year's semifinalist) and Laura Robson (besides Clijsters, the biggest story of the tournament) were all sporting Adidas Adizero. The bright yellow Adidas outfits may have ruled the US Open courts, and the three players mentioned here all played the fourth round, but the next brand we'll cover is clothing all the four semifinalists!

Of course, it's Nike! Champion Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova traditionally have both day and night dresses. Serena wore navy and pink with lime details, while Sharapova went for more subtle tones – liquid pink and solid dark without many loud contrasts.

Laura Robson inspired for greater heights

The US Open run of Laura Robson may have ended at the hands of defending champion Samantha Stosur in the fourth round, but the 18-year-old Brit's success in New York was such a confidence booster that she can't wait to challenge "the top girls" at the upcoming tournaments, including the next year's Australian Open.

After taking out Kim Clijsters, three-time US Open champion and one of the best players ever, then Li Na, last year's French Open champion, Laura fell to Stosur 6-4 6-4, but only after saving eight match points! Not only was this a huge achievement for her, but also for her country, who hadn't had a WTA player in a Grand Slam round of 16 since 1998.

Despite the lifted confidence, Laura is yet to embrace her increased celebrity status. On the morning of her match with Stosur, in her hotel there was a camera crew waiting for her, and she herself got excited thinking that there was some famous person in the hotel!

Robson believes that Asian courts will suit her well and is now heading to Guangzhou, China, to be followed by Tokyo, Beijing and Osaka.

How much of Robson's success can be attributed to her new coach, the intense Zeljko Krajan, who joined Robson's team after his short recent cooperation with Jelena Jankovic and Dominika Cibulkova? According to Robson, a lot, especially his specific tactics. On the other hand, Krajan believes that Robson has limitless potential and one of his tasks is to open her eyes and show her how much she has.

At No.89, Robson is the youngest player in the Top 100, while after the US Open her ranking is expected to rise to about No.75. (photo: Moo's Tennis Blog)

The capturing smile of Laura Robson – childhood photos

Can you recognize this smile? Those are the bright whites of Laura Robson, who is now a 18-year-old ousting Grand Slam champions this fortnight at the US Open. After ending Kim Clijsters' singles career at least a few days earlier than everyone expected, Laura went on to eliminate French Open champion Li Na in the third round, while title defender Samantha Stosur could be the young Briton's next victim. Therefore, I chose this as the perfect occasion to feature Laura in our favorite Childhood Photos of Women's Tennis Players series. Read more »

Laura Robson's dream run gets even dreamier with victory over Li Na

First it was the astonishing victory over Kim Clijsters, in none other than the last match of the three-time US Open champion's single career, and now 18-year-old Laura Robson followed it up with an upset of another Grand Slam champion, Li Na, 6-4 6-7(5) 6-2 in the third round of the US Open.

It's amazing how Robson, the youngest player in the Top 100, didn't lose her spirit after losing the second-set tiebreak, and neither did she crumple with anger when a poor line call was made against her. At 2-2 in the third set, on Li's serve, Robson earned a break point and even though her return was right on the baseline, the judges thought it was out, and after the challenge showed Robson was right, the point had to be replayed. Robson lost the replayed point and the next one, but amazingly she managed to get back to break points and finally take her opponent's serve, as deserved. After that, the young Brit went on a roll, winning all the remaining games and taking the match on the first match point.

What a run for Robson this US Open! She had never been past the second round of a major and now she's in the fourth round with her first Top 10 victory under her belt. In the upcoming encounter yet another Grand Slam champion is awaiting her, actually title defender, Samantha Stosur. Robson finishes Clijsters' career

Two lost tiebreaks in the US Open second round against Laura Robson, 7-6(4) 7-6(5), and we're, a bit surprisingly prematurely, saying goodbye to Kim Clijsters. If this was too fast a goodbye for you, let me tell you that Clijsters is out only from the singles competition. She's playing women's doubles with fellow Belgian Kirsten Flipkens, while in mixed doubles she's paired with American Bob Bryan.

Moreover, the official farewell is yet to come. At the Diamond Games on December 12, in Antwerp, Belgium, there will be a celebration of Kim's career, a night with top players, entertainment and surprises, while on the occasion the event will be called Kim's Thank You Games. Read more »
