Justine Henin to miss US Open due to Wimbledon injury

Justine Henin

Justine Henin injured her right elbow during the fourth-round defeat by fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters at Wimbledon and will not play tennis for about two months. The break will affect her participation in the "Best of Belgium" exhibition match in Brussels against Clijsters on July 8 (Henin will only attend the event) and, more importantly, the seven-time Grand Slam champion will have to miss the US Open which starts August 30. The former world No.1’s diagnosis is partial ligament fracture at the right elbow. (photo: Ralf Reinecke)

Serena sees off Sharapova, Clijsters beats Henin in Wimbledon fourth round

Maria Sharapova

Top seed Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova 7-6(9) 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. The 16th-seeded Russian came back from an early break of serve but wasted three set points in the first set tiebreak. One break of serve was enough for Williams to take the second set and hence the match. The defending champion’s serve is still in a rocking form and Sharapova confirms it: "She served extremely well, the best she's ever served against me, and that was the difference." Read more »

Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters set up fourth round clash at Wimbledon

Kim ClijstersJustine Henin

Belgians Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters are set to continue their rivalry in the fourth round of Wimbledon as they will play each other for the 25th time in their careers. Currently, the former world No.1s are tied at 12-12, but Henin has a 3-1 record against Clijsters on grass, and that sole loss came by retirement. Their last meeting on grass was in the semifinals of Wimbledon 2006 and Henin won it.

The eighth-seeded Clijsters advanced to the fourth round of Wimbledon with a routine win over No.27 seed Maria Kirilenko, 6-3 6-3. On Center Court, seed No.17 Henin stormed through the first set and rallied from 3-1 down in the second set to beat seed No.12 Nadia Petrova for the sixth straight time and with the score 6-1 6-4. Henin has never lost in the third round of a Grand Slam and her record is 27-0 now.

Fourth seed Jelena Jankovic cruised past No.28 seed Alona Bondarenko 6-0 6-3 and will have another shot at reaching her first Wimbledon quarterfinals. The 2007 Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli, seeded 11th this year, got past qualifier Greta Arn 6-3 6-4. Second seed and five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams also advanced, with a 6-4 6-2 victory over Alisa Kleybanova. (photos: sr_cranks, © Neal Trousdale)

Justine Henin wins Wimbledon tune-up event in the Netherlands

Justine HeninThe best thing in the second part of Justine Henin’s career would be a Wimbledon title and even though her coach Carlos Rodriguez doesn’t believe, or at least publicly, that she is capable of winning the grass court Grand Slam just yet, the Belgian former world No.1 is on a very good way to "complete" her career.

The top-seeded Henin defeated Germany's seventh seed Andrea Petkovic 3-6 6-3 6-4 in the final of the Unicef Open played on grass. She needed three sets to win the last match of the event and rallied from 3-0 in the decider, but a win is a win and I see no reason for Henin not to go all the way to winning her first Wimbledon title.

The Unicef Open title is Henin’s second since ending her retirement in January and her 43rd career title. (photo: Ralf Reinecke)

Henin cruises, two-time defending champ Tanasugarn loses at Unicef Open

Tamarine Tanasugarn

Top seed Justine Henin was an easy opening-round winner at the Unicef Open, formerly known as Ordina Open, while twice defending champion Tamarine Tanasugarn lost in the first round of the tournament where she won two of her three WTA titles.

Justine Henin defeated Angelique Kerber 6-4 6-2 and will play Roberta Vinci in the next round. It’s Henin’s first match on grass in three years. The $220,000 Unicef Open is the last tuneup for Wimbledon, the only major Henin still hasn’t won. Her win-loss record on grass is 46-10 now.

Twice defending champion Tamarine Tanasugarn won the first set, but lost to Australian qualifier Anastasia Rodionova 1-6 7-6(5) 6-3. The Thai Tanasugarn beat Yanina Wickmayer in the 2009 final, while two years ago she beat Dinara Safina, who has also exited too early this time. (photo: pfctdayelise)
