Impressions from the tennis exhibition in Belgrade

Yesterday I was in Belgrade at the charity tennis exhibition called NAJJ Srbije and now I’ll share my impressions with you. As you probably know, the event was organized by Serbia’s four best-ranked tennis players (Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic, Novak Djokovic, and Janko Tipsarevic) in order to raise money for charity, while at the same time giving home fans an opportunity to be a part of a tennis spectacle.

I liked the fact that the event was organized with heart, and that the players were genuinely happy to be in front of thousands of people in their home town (let’s just remind you that Jelena showed up despite her doctor’s orders to skip the exhibition). The other good thing is that they gave many young tennis players a chance to show their skills in front of so many people (just to mention that line judges were also kids – they were sooo cute). Jelena Jankovic becomes UNICEF ambassador

Jelena Jankovic becomes UNICEF ambassadorJelena Jankovic was officially appointed a UNICEF ambassador to Serbia on Thursday in Belgrade.

The world's third-ranked tennis player will try to justify the role that has been given to her, determined to promote a healthy lifestyle. Jankovic believes that the right to be healthy is one of the basic children’s rights and will therefore promote sport as a way to keep young people away from alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes. Jankovic also believes that everyone should do their share to make children and young people choose the physically active lifestyle, crucial for their overall health.

Jelena Jankovic underwent nose surgery; will play in Belgrade

Jelena JankovicWorld number three Jelena Jankovic is now in Miami, recovering from a complex surgery she underwent in order to put an end to her breathing problems. Jankovic was having trouble breathing during matches, which became most prominent during the last few tournaments of the season. The surgery was a success and Jankovic believes that it will enable her to play at her best level.

Jankovic’s doctor doesn’t allow her to play tennis until she fully recovers, and told her not to take part in the charity exhibition event at the Belgrade Arena, scheduled for December 7. However, Jelena is so determined to play in her home town, primarily because the funds raised go to charity, that she will ignore the doctor’s orders, and will play at the event. Oh, that’s so nice of her.

After the exhibition match, Jankovic will return to the States, and she will stay off the court until the doctor tells her it’s safe for her to resume training and start preparing for the 2008 season. (source: B92, photo via Tennis Universe)

Jelena Jankovic's funny quotes

Jelena JankovicJelena Jankovic is a player whose statements very often make me laugh or sometimes confuse me. Many times I just thought why hadn't she kept her mouth shut, but after all, I'm used to Jelena's personality and I will always like and understand her.

Since her statements are at the moment most inspiring of all the WTA players, I have been collecting them for a few months from a variety of sources, and decided to publish them today. I've been reading many articles and interviews every day, and whenever I found some funny quote of J.J., I took note of it. So, here's my modest collection:

After losing to Ana Ivanovic at this year's East West Bank Classic Jankovic said: "I felt like I was playing against a guy, the way her serves were coming at me. It's sometimes scary, and when she starts to scream, I'm like, Come on. She's quite a powerful, big girl." Read more »
