Jelena Jankovic wins first match as number one

Jelena Jankovic wins first match as number oneJelena Jankovic of Serbia has today officially become top-ranked player in the world and she celebrated that fact with a 6-3 6-3 victory over Zimbabwe's Cara Black in the first round of the Olympic Tennis Event.

Unfortunately, I'm sure Jankovic can’t be completely happy because she has an injury which can easily wreck her campaign.

"It's quite special to be playing as number one and I was quite excited about that," she said.

"I had some problems but I managed to finish the match. I will see what the doctors say and receive some treatment and see how I will feel for tomorrow."

Jankovic will face Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko in round two.

Jelena Jankovic practises in BeijingJelena Jankovic, who will become world number one on Monday, decided to miss the spectacular opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics because of a calf strain, and now I’m reading she might not be able to take part in the event because of the injury.

"I'll practise today and I'll see tomorrow how everything goes," said Jankovic who appeared at a press conference with her right leg strapped.

"If I can't play, if I'm not going to be able to give my best on the court, I will not go. It's not a risk I will take."

Ahaha, now she doesn't want to risk her health, at the Olympics! She could've adopted that policy earlier! (source: NDTV, photo: Getty Images)

By the way, the other tennis star from Serbia, Ana Ivanovic, is also not certain whether she’ll recover enough to participate in the Olympic Tennis Event. The world No.1 remains in doubt because of a persistent thumb injury.

Jelena Jankovic to become WTA number one

Jelena Jankovic to become number one after allJelena Jankovic lost to Dominika Cibulkova in the quarterfinals of this week’s Rogers Cup in Montreal and we said that she spoilt another chance of taking over the No.1 ranking from fellow Serb Ana Ivanovic as Jankovic had to reach the Rogers Cup finals in order to achieve the feat. Jankovic will after all end Ivanovic's nine-week reign as there will be no tournaments played next week ahead of the Beijing Olympics, and the WTA governing body's computer will drop the points from the events played in the same week one year ago. Read more »

Jelena Jankovic dumped out of Rogers Cup by Dominika Cibulkova

Jelena JankovicWorld No.2 Jelena Jankovic missed another chance to take the top ranking from fellow Serb Ana Ivanovic losing to Slovakian teenager Dominika Cibulkova in the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

En route to defeating second-seeded Jankovic 7-5 6-2 world No.31 Cibulkova won eight straight games. Jankovic at first took a 5-1 lead but couldn’t hold her serve. Dominika CibulkovaIn the second set, Jankovic played below par and her movement was not very good.

Jankovic could have become new world No.1 if she had reached the final at the Rogers Cup, but for the second consecutive week she failed to realize the dream of becoming top-ranked WTA player.

Cibulkova, who earlier defeated Russia's fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva and No.12 Nadia Petrova, will next face either No.10 Marian Bartoli of France and Japanese veteran Ai Sugiyama. (source: cbcsports, photos: Getty Images)
