Jelena Jankovic

Jelena Jankovic gave herself only three weeks of rest. The world No.1 is already training for the 2009 season, and for the preparations she chose the high altitude of San Luis in Mexico.

Jelena Jankovic meeting President of Serbia Boris Tadic

Jelena Jankovic and President of Serbia Boris TadicOn November 14, Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic had a meeting with Boris Tadic, the President of her home country, followed by an exclusive reception honoring the tennis star’s achievements in 2008.

"I'm very proud of myself for all I have accomplished in 2008," said the world No.1 Jankovic. "I worked very hard and fulfilled the dream I had since I held a tennis racquet in my hands for the first time. I can't find the right words in this moment. I remember the time when I was 10-years-old and trained in a cold balloon on Red Star courts at 6am. Thank you all for the support; my dream came true."

The meeting and reception, which took place at the Hyatt Hotel in Belgrade, were sponsored by the Serbian Tennis Federation. Jankovic got a plaque commemorating her achievements and a reward. She also received gifts from designer Roberto Cavalli and a bouquet of flowers from fellow Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic.

Jelena Jankovic visiting her movie premier, modeling for Mona, and more

World No.1 Jelena Jankovic is currently in her home Serbia, and has been kept busy with off-court activities. Let’s see what she’s been doing these days.

Jelena Jankovic on her movie premier

On November 12th Jelena attended the premiere of Jelena's World. As I’m reading over at Tennis Forum, more tickets were sold for Jelena's World than for the latest James Bond movie. Unbelievable! There are even plans for making an English version.

In addition, Jelena hit the runway during her stay in Serbia, modeling new Mona’s clothing line called The One, which the tennis star helped to design. Jelena modeled three new creations.

The Serbs and the Williamses to play tennis exhibition in New York

The Serbs and the Williamses to play tennis exhibition in New YorkJelena Jankovic, And Ivanovic, Venus and Serena Williams will play an exhibition event in New York on March 2nd, 2009.

The indoor tournament set to take place at Madison Square Garden is called "Tennis Night in America", and is the inaugural BNP Paribas Showdown for the Billie Jean King Cup.

There will be two semifinals and a final on the same night. The semis will have no-ad scoring and will be played over one set; the final will be a best-of-three set match with regular scoring, although the deciding set will be substituted by a tiebreak.

The night, which will benefit the Dream Vaccines Foundation charity, will also feature a special tribute to women’s sports. (source: Ana Ivanovic's website)

Venus Williams sees off Jelena Jankovic to reach Sony Ericsson Championships final

Venus Williams at the Sony Ericsson Championships in DohaAmerican Venus Williams defeated top seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-2 2-6 6-3 to reach the Sony Ericsson Championships final for the first time, having lost in the semis twice by now.

The seventh-seeded Williams was dominant in the first set, before a change of fortunes in the second. The Wimbledon champion rediscovered her first set touch at the start of the decider and moved into an early break. The 23-year-old Jankovic had a major chance in the sixth game of the third set, holding multiple break points. However, the world No.1 didn’t capitalize. Williams then confirmed her advantage and never looked back.

Jelena Jankovic at the Sony Ericsson Championships in DohaThe 28-year-old Williams will face Russian Vera Zvonareva in the final of the Sony Ericsson Championships. Zvonareva, seeded eighth, is also playing her first final at the season-ending Championships, plus, her biggest career final. She advanced to the championships match with a victory over Elena Dementieva.

Neither Williams nor Zvonareva have lost a match this week. In the Maroon Group, Williams defeated three Top 5 players (Dinara Safina, Serena Williams, and Elena Dementieva), while Zvonareva beat two Top 5 players in the White Group.

Williams holds a 5-1 record against Zvonareva, having lost only the first meeting with the Russian. But don’t let the stats fool you. Zvonareva totally earned her place in the Sony Ericsson Championships final, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she lifts the trophy on Sunday. (photos: Getty Images)
