Hantuchova upsets Jankovic in Charleston, Wozniacki advances to semis

Daniela HantuchovaEighth seed Daniela Hantuchova upset second seed Jelena Jankovic 1-6 6-3 6-3 to advance to the semifinals of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, where she will face fourth seed Samantha Stosur who advanced by beating Peng Shuai 6-4 6-1. Before this quarterfinal match-up on green clay, Hantuchova had won just one of four meetings she had with the 2007 Charleston champion Jankovic.

The world No.7 Jankovic rallied from a set down to win her first match of the tournament, in the second round against Edina Gallovits. The third round against Evgeniya Rodina was much easier for Jankovic, but the former world No.1 succumbed in the quarterfinals to the former world No.5, who hasn’t won a WTA singles title since 2007.

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki is still on a winning streak, and her eighth straight victory came in the Charleston quarterfinal against sixth seed Nadia Petrova. Wozniacki, last year’s runner-up to Sabine Lisicki at the Family Circle Cup, defeated the 2006 Charleston champion Petrova 6-3 6-4. Wozniacki’s opponent in Saturday's semifinal will be the winner of the match between Vera Zvonareva and Melanie Oudin. (photo: Stephane Martinache)

We have already shown some sneak previews of players' outfits for the upcoming season, and now we have nice new pics of Daniela Hantuchova as an addition. The Slovakian is supposed to wear this yellow and black adidas outfit at the 2010 Australian Open.

As you can notice, the colors are the same as Ana Ivanovic's new adidas dress. I like the collections adidas has prepared for 2010. (source: WTA Women's Tennis)

Jelena Jankovic falls in Moscow, Daniela Hantuchova in Luxembourg

Jelena JankovicImmediately after qualifying for the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, Jelena Jankovic crashed out of the Kremlin Cup, losing to Alisa Kleybanova 6-4 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Fourth seed Daniela Hantuchova was dumped out by unseeded Shahar Peer in the other tournament of the week, played in Luxembourg.

Second seed Jankovic, who failed to defend her Kremlin Cup title, said she wasn’t saving herself for Doha which starts October 27, rather, she simply couldn’t cope with Kleybanova at the time.

Russian Kleybanova will take on Olga Govortsova in the semifinals.

At the BGL Luxembourg Open, Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova lost her quarterfinal match against Shahar Peer of Israel in straight sets, 6-2 7-6(4).  Peer’s next opponent will be sixth seed Sabine Lisicki. In the quarters, the German defeated Patty Schnyder, who had taken out the 2009 US Open champion and five-time titlist in Luxembourg Kim Clijsters in the previous round. (photo: Ralf Reinecke)

Daniela Hantuchova to focus on singles after Ai Sugiyama’s retirement

Daniela HantuchovaAi Sugiyama of Japan, 34, is planning to retire after the Toray Pan Pacific Open, which will leave Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova without a doubles partner.

Hantuchova addresses the issue in her Seoul blog:

We're playing our last tournament together in Tokyo. It's really sad, but I'm really glad I'll be a part of her last tournament. Ai has given me so many wonderful memories on the court, and we're great friends, so it's going to be tough to see her go. She's such a great fighter and a great person. The tennis world will miss her, for sure I will. It won't be easy to find another one like her. Next year I may play some doubles here and there but I'm really going to try focusing on my singles. One of the reasons I was playing doubles so much was because Ai was one of my best friends, and we were having so much fun.

The on-again, off-again partnership between Sugiyama and Hantuchova has brought them three Sony Ericsson WTA Tour titles and two Grand Slam finals. Their pairing is interesting as Sugiyama is almost eight years older than Hantuchova and seven inches smaller. (source: Women Who Serve, photo: Ralf Reinecke)

Absolutely no troubles for Serena Williams in US Open fourth round

Serena WilliamsSecond seed Serena Williams lost just two games against seed No.22 Daniela Hantuchova to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2009 US Open.

The Slovakian world No.24 was a good competitor until 2-2 in the first set, but since then, before you knew it, the American defending US Open champion won the match by winning all the following games.

Nevertheless, Hantuchova has made her best US Open run since a quarterfinal finish as a teenager in 2002.
