Lucie Safarova eliminates top seed Caroline Wozniacki from Stuttgart

Caroline WozniackiThe ankle injury Caroline Wozniacki sustained in the semifinals of the Family Circle Cup two weeks ago is still hampering the Dane’s movement and she lost to Lucie Safarova 6-4 6-4 in the second round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

The 38th-ranked Safarova sensed that her opponent had troubles with movement and forced that part of her game. The top-seeded Wozniacki didn’t have a single chance to break Safarova’s serve, while the Czech won the match thanks to one break in each set.

It was the first encounter of Safarova and Wozniacki. The 23-year-old Safarova earned her fifth career win over a Top 5 player by defeating the world No.2 Wozniacki (her first four all came in 2007). (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

Fall and injury end Caroline Wozniacki’s winning streak

Caroline WozniackiTop seed Caroline Wozniacki fell during the first set of her semifinal against seventh seed Vera Zvonareva at the Family Circle Cup, injured her right ankle, retired and ended her eight-match winning streak.

The semifinal started off in favor of Zvonareva, who raced to a 3-0 lead. Last year’s Charleston finalist Wozniacki, after short consultations with her father, won her first game in the match, but shortly after, during one point in the seventh game, she fell and lay on the green clay in tears.  A medical timeout followed and even though Wozniacki returned to the court she very soon retired, at 5-2 in the first set.

The world No.2 Wozniacki should next play the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, if her injury heals in time.

Daniela HantuchovaEighth seed Daniela Hantuchova upset second seed Jelena Jankovic 1-6 6-3 6-3 to advance to the semifinals of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, where she will face fourth seed Samantha Stosur who advanced by beating Peng Shuai 6-4 6-1. Before this quarterfinal match-up on green clay, Hantuchova had won just one of four meetings she had with the 2007 Charleston champion Jankovic.

The world No.7 Jankovic rallied from a set down to win her first match of the tournament, in the second round against Edina Gallovits. The third round against Evgeniya Rodina was much easier for Jankovic, but the former world No.1 succumbed in the quarterfinals to the former world No.5, who hasn’t won a WTA singles title since 2007.

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki is still on a winning streak, and her eighth straight victory came in the Charleston quarterfinal against sixth seed Nadia Petrova. Wozniacki, last year’s runner-up to Sabine Lisicki at the Family Circle Cup, defeated the 2006 Charleston champion Petrova 6-3 6-4. Caroline Wozniacki at MPS Group Championships

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki evened her win-loss record in WTA singles finals to 7-7 by winning her second straight title at the MPS Group Championships in Florida. The world No.2’s opponent in the final was Belorussian Olga Govortsova.

The 52nd-ranked Govotsova failed to win her first singles title on the Tour, fell to 0-3 in finals on the pro circuit and lost her first ever match-up with Wozniacki. However, even though Wozniacki was a clear favorite in the final, Govortsova had a 4-1 lead in the second set, and a set point at 5-4. Still, she was defeated by the Dane 6-2 7-5.

The prize money the finalists took home is the same as in the other International-level tournament that ended today (with Flavia Pennetta as winner and Carla Suarez Navarro as runner-up), Woznicki earned $37,000 and Govortsova $19,000. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)
