Caroline Wozniacki wins Danish Open

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki made her home fans happy by winning the inaugural Danish Open which official name is e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open 2010.

The world No.3 Wozniacki had a straight set victory in the final against Czech world No.51 Klara Zakopalova, after being pushed to three sets in her three previous matches (against Anna Chakvetadze in the semifinals, Julia Goerges in the quarterfinals, and Iveta Benesova in the second round).

Wozniacki easily won the first set of the final against seventh-seeded Zakopalova, breaking the Czech twice, while in the second set the Dane fought back from a break down to win in a tiebreak. Final score: 6-2 7-6(5).

It is eighth WTA title for Wozniacki, while Zakopalova remains at two WTA titles, both of which came in 2005. By winning the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open 2010 Wozniacki earned $37,000 and Zakopalova earned $19,000 as a runner-up. (photo via e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open 2010)

Tennis players or fashion icons?

CNN's Kate Giles reports on the lucrative sports deals that tennis players have and how valuable they are to their sponsors. Some top players earn more money off the court than on the court (even though their earnings from playing tournaments are enormous).

Look at our favorite Maria Sharapova as an example: the Russian has a $65 million deal with Nike (don’t forget ALL the other sponsors she has) and her total career prize money is about $13 million which includes three Grand Slam titles. What makes tennis players so interesting to sports brands is the fact that they are not famous only within the niche of tennis but their celebrity status spreads much further.

The second part of the video is even more interesting. It shows how tennis and fashion have always complemented each other and it takes us 120 years back. The TV presenter tries on one of the women's tennis outfits from the past. Remember that we discussed how it would be a cool statement to introduce some of those fashion elements from history to the present (it was in our article called "Wimbledon evolution in video, history photos"). It took Kate half an hour to put the complete 11-piece outfit on! However, I’m still for bringing back some details from the past. (source: CNN’s Open Court)

Childhood photo of Caroline Wozniacki

Caroline Wozniacki young pic

Let’s continue our traditional series of photos of women’s tennis players when they were children. It’s not hard to tell that the person in the above picture is Caroline Wozniacki – she hasn’t changed much, actually not a lot of time has passed, she’s still only 20.

The young Dane has seven WTA singles titles under her belt, and can be proud of reaching the final of the 2009 US Open. In addition, she is currently ranked fourth, and was once ranked as high as No.2. Plus, she is the only Danish woman in the Top 500 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

Remember the interview with 13-year-old Wozniacki? Don’t skip that one if you haven’t seen it.

Fashion radar: WTA players' Wimbledon whites

Wimbledon may have strict dress code but there still is enough space for players and their brands to experiment and bring something new and exciting. Let's see how successful they've been this year.

Serena and Venus Williams at Wimbledon 2010

Let's start with Venus and Serena Williams. We've already paid close attention to both Venus' Eleven dress and Serena's Nike dress, but it's worth mentioning them again – Venus was definitely unique with fringes all over the bottom part of the dress, while Serena wore a more classic design inspired by strawberries and cream and a cute narrow headband. Just to use the opportunity to mention that the sisters, twice defending champions, lost in doubles quarterfinals today to Elena Vesnina and Vera Zvonareva 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Jelena Jankovic at Wimbledon 2010

Chinese brand ANTA and Jelena Jankovic were simple and classy at this year's Wimbledon. JJ also sported a customized racquet bag and was fully equipped for the greatest Grand Slam.

Caroline Wozniacki at Wimbledon 2010

Once my favorite tennis fashion designer Stella McCartney seems to be lacking inspiration as Caroline Wozniacki has been wearing pretty much the same dress for months. Now I can't blame her, why bother when you're going to lose your match in 46 minutes (sorry, Caro). Talking about Stella, we have to mention Maria Kirilenko who looks awesome even in the simple adidas BARRICADE top and skort. Read more »

Top two seeds Wozniacki and Schiavone crash out of AEGON International in round one

Caroline Wozniacki

Top seed and defending champion Caroline Wozniacki lost her first career encounter with Aravane Rezai 6-4 1-6 6-3 in the opening round of the AEGON International. Wozniacki was playing her first match on grass this year, and lost to Rezai who was coming off a semifinal appearance in Birmingham last week, where she pushed eventual champion Li Na to three sets.

Francesca Schiavone

Just like Wozniacki, second-seeded Francesca Schiavone was playing her first grass court match of the season and also said goodbye already in the beginning, falling to Sorana Cirstea 7-5 6-3. Playing her first tournament since winning the French Open, the 2009 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Schiavone fought hard to stay in both sets but lost her first match as a Top 10 player.

On the other hand, fifth seed Kim Clijsters was playing her first match on grass since 2006 and handily defeated fellow Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 6-1 6-1. (photos: Stephane Martinache, © Neal Trousdale)
