Caroline Wozniacki claims AEGON International title

Caroline Wozniacki claims AEGON International titleWorld number nine Caroline Wozniacki won her fifth career WTA singles title by beating Virginie Razzano 7-6(5) 7-5 in the final of the AEGON International.

In the first set there was one break of serve on each side and then in the tiebreak the sixth seed Wozniacki won the set. The Dane won the see-saw second set too, converting her third match point on Razzano's failed drop shot.

The world No.25 Razzano still hasn’t managed to win a set against Wozniacki, but in the trophy ceremony both players were positive and happy.

"I think I have a done great job this week," said Razzano. "It was tough every day but I’m happy to go into the final today and I would like to give congratulation to Caroline. She played well this week, she is a great player." (via AEGON International)

Adidas by Stella McCartney signs Caroline Wozniacki, no more Maria Kirilenko

Stella McCartney’s patience deserves every respect, but even her waiting for Maria Kirilenko to actually showcase some of her outfits seems to have ended since Caroline Wozniacki has been chosen as a new promoter of adidas by Stella McCartney.

Maria Kirilenko has been constantly losing early in tournaments and tennis fans barely got the chance to see beautiful adidas by Stella McCartney designs. I’m sure the 18-year-old Dane will be a much better promoter of the brand, although Kirilenko and adidas by Stella McCartney were a match made in heaven considering how the clothes suited the Russian.

Serena Williams advances, Wozniacki falls to Cirstea at French Open

Caroline Wozniacki at Roland Garros 2009Second seed Serena Williams avoided the fate of her sister Venus, and recovered from being a set down to beat Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain 4-6 6-3 6-4 and move into the fourth round of the French Open.

The match was accompanied by one incident in the first set, because of which Williams called her opponent a cheat. Martinez Sanchez broke to lead 3-2, although the crucial point-winning shot appeared to rebound off her arm.

"The ball did touch her 100 percent on her arm. The rules of tennis are when the ball hits your body, then it's out of play […] She should have lost the point instead of cheating," said the ten-time Grand Slam champion Williams.

However, Martinez Sanchez insisted she was innocent.

"I put the racquet up. The ball was in and it was a point for me. It didn't hit me or my body. To say I'm a 'cheat' is stupid. I'm not going to comment on it."

Tenth seed Caroline Wozniacki lost to world No.41 Sorana Cirstea of Romania 7-6(3) 7-5. Wozniacki, who has recently become the first Danish WTA player to crack the Top 10, needed a medical time-out for a back problem when just two points from defeat.

Other notable third-round results of the day: Samantha Stosur upset Elena Dementieva, Svetlana Kuznetsova dispatched Melinda Czink 6-1 6-3, Jelena Jankovic stormed into the fourth round with a 6-1 6-1 crushing of Jarmila Groth, Victoria Azarenka defeated Carla Suarez Navarro 5-7 7-5 6-2, and Agnieszka Radwanska beat Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2 6-4.
